Wade, <\/em>which has some critics concerned about access to contraceptives.<\/p>\n<p>The company behind the application, HRA Pharma, a Perrigo Company, seeks to become the first daily birth control pill available in the U.S. without a prescription.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis historic application marks a groundbreaking moment in contraceptive access and reproductive equity in the U.S.,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/perrigos-hra-pharma-submits-application-to-fda-for-first-ever-otc-birth-control-pill-301583602.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> Fre\u0301de\u0301rique Welgryn, Chief Strategic Operations and Innovation Officer at HRA Pharma, in a statement.\u00a0\u201cMore than 60 years ago, prescription birth control pills in the U.S. empowered women to plan if and when they want to get pregnant. Moving a safe and effective prescription birth control pill to OTC will help even more women and people access contraception without facing unnecessary barriers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has supported the move to make birth control available over-the-counter in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acog.org\/clinical\/clinical-guidance\/committee-opinion\/articles\/2019\/10\/over-the-counter-access-to-hormonal-contraception\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">its research<\/a>, citing barriers to access as a reason for inconsistent or non-use of birth control pills.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26666711\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to<\/a> the National Library of Medicine, 29% of American women who had ever tried to get a prescription for birth control in a 2016 study reported a problem with obtaining a prescription or refills of birth control pills. The percentage was higher among those who were uninsured and Spanish-speaking women in the study.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the push by the company to provide the new over-the-counter option, experts don\u2019t expect any change to occur immediately. Most FDA approvals take more than a year. In addition, if approved, the access would only include HRA Pharm\u2019s Opill pill.<\/p>\n<p>In March, more than 50 members of the House\u2019s Pro-Choice Caucus also sent a letter urging the FDA to review over-the-counter applications for birth control pills right away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a critical issue for reproductive health, rights, and justice,\u201d\u00a0the lawmakers <a href=\"https:\/\/pressley.house.gov\/sites\/pressley.house.gov\/files\/PCC%20OTC%20letter.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> in the letter led by Reps. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), Barbara Lee (D-CA), Diana DeGette (D-CO), and Judy Chu (D-CA). \u201cWe ask for your ongoing commitment to advance public health and follow the science and data in all decisions, including the timely review of the oral contraception applications.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The push for increased options for birth control pills is one of the multiple areas of emphasis following the recent Supreme Court abortion ruling. Despite a push by some on the left that have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/activists-launch-panicked-social-media-campaign-after-roe-here-are-six-misconceptions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claimed<\/a> conservatives will \u201cgo after\u201d birth control next, the court\u2019s ruling showed no evidence that this will be the case.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, access to abortion pills has become a discussion for states seeking to further limit abortions following the court\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n<p>Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves (R) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/mississippi-governor-says-doctors-in-his-state-will-lose-their-medical-license-for-prescribing-abortion-pills\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> last week that doctors in his state would lose their medical licenses for prescribing abortion pills. Ahead of the Supreme Court\u2019s ruling, Governor John Bel Edwards (D-LA) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/louisiana-governor-signs-bill-outlawing-the-mailing-of-abortion-pills\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">signed<\/a>\u00a0a bill into law that will make mailing abortion pills a crime in his state.<\/p>\n<p>In March, South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem (R) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/south-dakota-passes-governor-noems-bill-to-ban-abortion-by-telemedicine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">signed<\/a> a bill into law banning telemedicine abortion in her state.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) received its first application for an over-the-counter birth control pill on Monday.
