Sustained bombardment has progressively displaced the local population and levelled the settlements and infrastructure that were being defended, forcing the Ukrainian military to abandon territory after it is devastated.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Massive bombardments gradually dislodged Ukrainian troops from the symbolically important cities of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/06\/putins-big-victory-ukraine-orders-withdrawal-of-severodonetsk\/\">Severodonetsk<\/a> and Lyschansk <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/06\/russia-might-win-in-donbas-but-the-war-in-ukraine-looks-unsustainable\/\">by the end of June<\/a>, while making it impossible for Ukrainian forces to concentrate with adequate speed and numbers to effectively counterattack. Even more ominously, Watling estimates Ukrainian personnel losses may now be approaching parity with Russia\u2019s.\n<\/p>\n<p>The silver lining is that Ukrainian units have repeatedly avoided encirclement and annihilation\u2014part of Moscow\u2019s original objectives in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/07\/russias-brutal-war-in-the-donbas-proves-ukraine-cant-win\/\">Donbas<\/a>\u2014through timely and relatively orderly withdrawals, and actually <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/07\/putin-has-a-problem-ukraines-guerrilla-war-against-russia-is-now-in-full-swing\/\"><em>gained <\/em>ground around Kherson<\/a> in southern Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Russian artillery has an over 3:1 firepower advantage<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>Russia doesn\u2019t actually have a huge quantitative advantage in combat troops compared to Ukraine (because it\u2019s not fully mobilized)\u2014but it does have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/02\/a-russia-ukraine-war-a-missile-and-artillery-battle-like-no-other\/\">much more artillery<\/a>, and is generating a lot more artillery <em>fires<\/em>.\n<\/p>\n<p>According to the report, Russian howitzers are expending 20,000 shells daily on average, compared to 6,000 fired by Ukraine. The ratio for rocket artillery and ballistic missiles launches is even worse. And Ukraine still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/06\/ukraine-is-running-out-of-artillery-ammo-to-fight-russia\/\">risks exhausting its supply<\/a> of Soviet-standard 152-millimeter shells <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/06\/putins-next-ukraine-disaster-the-russian-army-is-running-out-of-ammo\/\">even faster than Russia does<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Russian artillery remains more centralized than expected.<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>Russia\u2019s military was thought to have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2021\/07\/the-dirty-way-russia-would-wage-war-against-the-u-s-military-and-win\/\">decentralized much artillery<\/a> into its key tactical unit, the tank or infantry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2021\/12\/russian-battalion-groups-are-assembling-around-ukraine-what-is-putin-up-to\/\">battalion tactical group<\/a> (BTG), thought to integrate a powerful (and theoretically more responsive) complement of 1-3 artillery batteries.\n<\/p>\n<p>But according to the study, BTGs in practice often have only a modest number of mortars and older howitzers. Instead, brigade- and divisional command echelons jealously retain control of more modern artillery assets in centralized \u2018artillery tactical groups.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, artillery in BTGs has been saddled with shockingly poor communications architecture, compelling units to verify fire missions via un-encrypted civilian cell phones, resulting in a ponderous \u2018kill-chain\u2019.\n<\/p>\n<p>The result, per the report: \u201c\u2026Russian artillery has largely operated independently from \u2013 rather than in close support of\u2014its maneuver elements [ie. tanks and infantry], with supportive fire missions having long delays.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_34543\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-34543\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Russian Artillery Firing. Image Credit: Creative Commons.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Russian artillery becomes <em>much <\/em>more effective when linked to drones.<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>Prior to 2022, Russia\u2019s military was perceived to have developed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2021\/07\/the-dirty-way-russia-would-wage-war-against-the-u-s-military-and-win\/\">Western-style \u201creconnaissance-fires complex\u201d<\/a> where forward drone surveillance assets (especially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/davidhambling\/2022\/04\/11\/russias-deadly-artillery-drones-have-a-strange-secret\/\">Orlan-10 surveillance drones<\/a>) could cue in precise and timely strikes, aided by digital fire direction\/battle management systems.\n<\/p>\n<p>This was not in evidence in the war\u2019s early days due to rushed war preparations, but since then it\u2019s clear Russia <em>sometimes <\/em>can implement this doctrine and deliver deadly precision attacks\u2014it\u2019s just not a widespread capability, due to shortages of adequately trained personnel <em>and <\/em>hardware, particularly communications systems and drones.<\/p>\n<p>For example, when supported by drones, Russian artillery can adjust fires in real time to hit moving targets. Drone spotters also enable the deployment of small sub-units of just one or two guns to deliver effective strikes, rather than fully batteries of six guns.\n<\/p>\n<p>But a lack of proficient personnel and hardware (particularly the larger Orlan-30 drone, which has a laser designator) has resulted in Russian units wasting supplies of laser-guided Krasnopol rounds in unguided barrages.\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Russia assigns different roles to different types of artillery.<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>According to Watling, while Russia employs howitzers for attacking discrete point targets, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/06\/vacuum-bomber-russias-tos-1a-thermobaric-artillery-is-gruesome\/\">multiple-rocket launcher systems<\/a> are often used to bar the movement of Ukrainian forces by laying down a curtain of destruction in between them and their desired objective.\n<\/p>\n<p>Counter-battery attacks targeting Ukrainian artillery, as well as Ukrainian drone operators, are the preserve of Tochka-U ballistic missiles and Russia\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/02\/a-russia-ukraine-war-a-missile-and-artillery-battle-like-no-other\/\">longest-range guns<\/a> controlled at the divisional level: the 2A65 <em>Msta <\/em>and 2A36 <em>Giatsint <\/em>towed-howitzers, their 2S19 and 2S5 self-propelled variants, and the 2S7M <em>Malka <\/em>203-millimeter self-propelled howitzer.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_43454\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43454\" class=\"size-large wp-image-43454\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/2S7-Malka-1200x675-1.jpg\" alt=\"2S7 Malka\" width=\"880\" height=\"495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/2S7-Malka-1200x675-1.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/2S7-Malka-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/2S7-Malka-768x432-1.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/2S7-Malka-1024x576-1.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/2S7-Malka-600x337-1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/2S7-Malka.jpg 1280w\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-43454\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">2S7 Malka. Image Credit: Creative Commons.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Here\u2019s how Russian artillery deploys<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>Ukrainian sources claim Russian artillery units typically deploy roughly one-third of their maximum firing range back from the frontline to insulate against enemy attacks.\n<\/p>\n<p>Watling writes that <em>\u201c\u2026mortars are largely positioned 1.5 km [1 mile] back from the forward line of own troops, artillery tactical groups subordinated to brigades 8 km [5 miles] back, and artillery tactical groups armed with longer-ranged systems dedicated to deep fires at 10\u201315 km [6-9 miles] back.\u201d <\/em>\n<\/p>\n<p>Howitzer units usually deploy in a 100\u00d7300 meter area, with 20-40 meters between guns. Rocket-launcher units instead use a linear formation, with up to 150-meters separating each launcher truck.\n<\/p>\n<p>The report also describes Russian units deploying \u2018dummy\u2019 artillery batteries of mostly damaged\/destroyed guns to divert and absorb Ukrainian strikes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Russia\u2019s counter-battery game is slow\u2014except when aided by drones.<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>Counter-battery artillery seeks to take out an opponent\u2019s artillery, leveraging radars and acoustic sensors to trace incoming shellfire back to its point of origin. The faster that can be accomplished, the more likely counter-battery fire will catch the attacking battery before it can relocate.\n<\/p>\n<p>But according to Watling &#038; Reynolds, Russian counter-battery is slow, usually averaging 30 minutes to launch a counter-battery strike. That\u2019s more than enough time for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/05\/video-ukraine-is-attacking-russian-troops-with-m777-u-s-155-millimeter-howitzers\/\">even towed artillery<\/a> to fire, hitch up to trucks and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/05\/russia-attacked-u-s-supplied-howitzers-in-ukraine-with-kamikaze-drones-and-rockets\/\">get the hell out of dodge<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>But when networked with a drone spotter, Russian guns can execute accurate counter-battery strikes in just 3-5 minutes. Only Ukraine\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/sebastienroblin\/2022\/04\/21\/the-dutch-are-sending-huge-german-armored-howitzers-to-ukraine\/?sh=700651f89380\">most modern, Western-supplied mobile artillery systems<\/a> can shoot-and-scoot fast enough to avoid that. Image Credit: Creative Commons.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Russian artillery doesn\u2019t shoot-and-scoot.<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>While the report notes Ukrainian units report can \u201cconsistently evade\u201d Russian counter-battery fire (at least when drones aren\u2019t around), Russian artillery crews mostly didn\u2019t move after firing\u2014displacing only <em>after<\/em> having come under attack, ie. \u2018take fire and <em>then<\/em> scoot.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>Ukrainian sources also claim Russian howitzers crews, when coming under shellfire, typically abandon their guns to seek cover\u2014even when vehicle-mounted.\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ammunition supply is Russia\u2019s Achille\u2019s heel <\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>Russia\u2019s employment of artillery may lack finesse by Western standards, but it still has had a dominant role in facilitating the capture of key objectives and inflicted unsupportable casualties. How to tackle such a broadly destructive, if clumsy, behemoth?\n<\/p>\n<p>Watling argues the key is to starve the beast, ie. <em>\u201c\u2026the logistics burden posed by the transportation and stockpiling of the vast quantity of shells that allows Russia to continue to maneuver by fire.\u201d<\/em>\n<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s because Moscow\u2019s ground forces are infamously dependent on rail logistics to supply forces compared to Western armies, lacking adequate trucks and modern palletized load-lifting equipment.\n<\/p>\n<p>Watling writes: <em>\u201c\u2026ammunitions dumps at the divisional and brigade level are large, distinct, hard to conceal or defend, and slow to relocate\u2026given the disparity in guns and the shortage of Russian precision fires, the fastest way to level the playing field is to enable Ukraine to strike Russian artillery logistics.\u201d<\/em>\n<\/p>\n<p>While the report argues Ukraine has failed to systematically exploit this weakness, this arguably has changed, given a stunning succession of precision attacks on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/06\/putins-next-ukraine-disaster-the-russian-army-is-running-out-of-ammo\/\">Russian ammunition depots<\/a> deep behind the frontline in July.\n<\/p>\n[embedded content]\n<\/p>\n<p>These are made possible by Ukraine\u2019s use of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/sebastienroblin\/2022\/05\/31\/biden-decoded-ukraine-will-get-us-rocket-systems-but-not-long-range-missiles\/\">Western-supplied<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19fortyfive.com\/2022\/04\/u-s-himars-rocket-artillery-going-to-ukraine-would-be-a-game-changer\/\">HIMARS<\/a> and M270 rocket artillery systems, which can precisely attack targets nearly 50 miles away using GPS-guided rockets.\n<\/p>\n<p>Such strikes could hamstring Russia\u2019s artillery war, but only so long as Ukraine receives <em>enough<\/em> HIMARS\/M270s and long-range Western howitzers quickly enough, <em>and<\/em> if NATO states adequately increase production of 155-millimeter shells so as to sustain deliveries to Ukraine.
