Jones, the colorful character actor who worked on dozens of Westerns, including the Sam Peckinpah classics\u00a0<em>The Wild Bunch\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Ride the High Country\u00a0<\/em>as a member of the famed filmmaker\u2019s regular posse, has died. He was 94.<\/p>\n<p>Jones died Saturday of natural causes at his home in the Hollywood Hills, his grandson\u00a0Ert\u00e9 deGarces told <em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Jones portrayed ranch hand Andy Belden on 25 episodes of NBC\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Virginian\u00a0<\/em>over an eight-year span, was one of the bad guys who slipped a noose over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/clint-eastwood\/\" id=\"auto-tag_clint-eastwood\" data-tag=\"clint-eastwood\">Clint Eastwood<\/a>\u2019s neck in\u00a0<em>Hang \u2018Em High\u00a0<\/em>(1968) and played a sheriff on the 1983-84 NBC primetime soap\u00a0<em>The Yellow Rose<\/em>, starring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/sam-elliott\/\" id=\"auto-tag_sam-elliott\" data-tag=\"sam-elliott\">Sam Elliott<\/a>, Cybill Shepherd and Chuck Connors.<\/p>\n<div class=\"injected-related-story \/\/ u-margin-tb-250 u-margin-t-4@desktop-xl u-margin-b-3@desktop-xl\">\n<h3 id=\"title-of-a-story\" class=\"c-title  a-font-primary-xs lrv-u-margin-b-075\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tRelated Stories\t\t<\/p>\n<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Texas native also portrayed Clark County Commissioner Pat Webb, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/robert-de-niro\/\" id=\"auto-tag_robert-de-niro\" data-tag=\"robert-de-niro\">Robert De Niro<\/a>\u2019s nemesis, in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/martin-scorsese\/\" id=\"auto-tag_martin-scorsese\" data-tag=\"martin-scorsese\">Martin Scorsese<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0<em>Casino\u00a0<\/em>(1995) and country singer Chuck Akers in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/robert-altman\/\" id=\"auto-tag_robert-altman\" data-tag=\"robert-altman\">Robert Altman<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0<em>A Prairie Home Companion\u00a0<\/em>(2006), his final credit.<\/p>\n<p>In a career that spanned more than five decades, Jones is perhaps best known for his turn as the bounty hunter T.C. in\u00a0<em>The Wild Bunch\u00a0<\/em>(1969). He and Strother Martin, as Coffer, \u201cbring their depraved characters to life with a childish energy \u2014 they take great enjoyment from making killing into a contest as they jockey to claim who has a higher body count after each bloody encounter.\u201d That\u2019s how a Warner Bros. website promoting the film <a href=\"https:\/\/www.warnerbros.com\/news\/articles\/2019\/06\/21\/wild-bunch-turns-50\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">describes<\/a> their performances.<\/p>\n<p>Jones first worked with Peckinpah in 1960 on the short-lived NBC Western\u00a0<em>Klondike<\/em>. He portrayed one of the four ruthless brothers who fight it out with Joel McCrea and Randolph Scott in\u00a0<em>Ride the High Country\u00a0<\/em>(1962) and was a confederate soldier (and Warren Oates\u2019 brother) in\u00a0<em>Major Dundee\u00a0<\/em>(1965).<\/p>\n<p>He also played no-good characters who meet their untimely ends in Peckinpah\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Ballad of Cable Hogue\u00a0<\/em>(1970) and\u00a0<em>Pat Garrett &#038; Billy the Kid\u00a0<\/em>(1973).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSam was a genius and I loved him, but he was a basket case. He drove everybody nuts,\u201d Jones <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bakersfield.com\/turning-l-q-jones-reflects-on-career-as-hollywood-heavy\/article_24b39d2a-83b2-11e7-a0b2-43c79d6a23f1.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">said<\/a> in a 2017 interview with Nick Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>On the other side of the camera, Jones directed, co-wrote and produced\u00a0<em>A Boy and His Dog\u00a0<\/em>(1975), a cult black comedy set in the post-apocalyptic year of 2024 that starred <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/don-johnson\/\" id=\"auto-tag_don-johnson\" data-tag=\"don-johnson\">Don Johnson<\/a> and Jason Robards and was based on a novella by sci-fi legend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/harlan-ellison-dead-volatile-legend-science-fiction-was-84-1062923\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Harlan Ellison<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He was born Justice Ellis McQueen Jr. on Aug. 19, 1927, in Beaumont, Texas, the son of a railroad worker. When he was young, his mother, Jessie, was killed in an automobile accident, and he was raised by relatives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had a horse by the time I was 8 or 9 and grew up around tough rodeo people \u2014 my uncle was into roping \u2014 so Westerns were easy and fun,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He served in the U.S. Navy and studied law at the University of Texas, where his roommate was future\u00a0<em>Daniel Boone\u00a0<\/em>star Fess Parker. After college, he bought a ranch in Nicaragua to make money on beans, corn and dairy, but that didn\u2019t go as well as he had hoped.<\/p>\n<p>Parker had moved to Hollywood and had appeared in a few films when he sent his college buddy a copy of the Leon Uris novel\u00a0<em>Battle Cry<\/em>, which was about to become a big-budget Warner Bros. war movie directed by Raoul Walsh. Parker was playing a soldier in the adaptation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFess encouraged me to come out and drew me a map on the back of a laundry-shirt stuffing showing how to get to the studio,\u201d he recalled. \u201cWithin two days of arriving, I had the part of [Pvt.] L.Q. Jones in\u00a0<em>Battle Cry\u00a0<\/em>and probably would never have been in the business had it not been for Fess.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McQueen liked the character\u2019s name so much, he decided to adopt it as his stage name.<\/p>\n<p>The newly minted L.Q. Jones kept extremely busy after that, appearing on such shows as\u00a0<em>Cheyenne<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Gunsmoke<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Laramie<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Wagon Train<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Lassie<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Rawhide<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Johnny Ringo<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Big Valley\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Perry Mason\u00a0<\/em>\u2014 sometimes doing two or three series a week \u2014 and in films including\u00a0<em>Target Zero\u00a0<\/em>(1955) \u2014 his first of his many pairings with Martin, another Peckinpah regular \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/elvis-presley\/\" id=\"auto-tag_elvis-presley\" data-tag=\"elvis-presley\">Elvis Presley<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0<em>Love Me Tender\u00a0<\/em>(1956) and\u00a0<em>Flaming Star\u00a0<\/em>(1960), Don Siegel\u2019s\u00a0<em>Hell Is for Heroes\u00a0<\/em>(1962) and Walsh\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Naked and the Dead\u00a0<\/em>(1958).<\/p>\n<p>He said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/stanley-kubrick\/\" id=\"auto-tag_stanley-kubrick\" data-tag=\"stanley-kubrick\">Stanley Kubrick<\/a> offered him the role of Major T.J. \u201cKing\u201d Kong that went to Slim Pickens in\u00a0<em>Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb\u00a0<\/em>(1964), but he was \u201ctied up with another picture\u201d and had to pass.<\/p>\n<p>Working on a Peckinpah film could be a challenge, he <a href=\"https:\/\/camerainthesun.com\/?p=15011\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">noted<\/a> in a wide-ranging interview for the website Camera in the Sun.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re not standing in the same place Sam envisioned it a thousand times for the year \u2014 and he\u2019s not told anybody what it is \u2014 but if you\u2019re not there in that particular place, he\u2019s furious because you haven\u2019t done your job right in his estimation. That fact that he hadn\u2019t told you anything doesn\u2019t make a difference,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd it doesn\u2019t make a difference whether you\u2019re Bill Holden or an extra. Those of us who\u2019d worked with him \u2014 you notice he had a group that worked with him his whole career \u2014 just learned where to be, thinking the way Sam would think.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the mid-\u201960s, he and actor Alvy Moore formed the production company LQ\/JAF, and they made four films: <em>The Devil\u2019s Bedroom\u00a0<\/em>(1964), which Jones also directed;\u00a0<em>The Witchmaker\u00a0<\/em>(1969);\u00a0<em>The Brotherhood of Satan\u00a0<\/em>(1971), which he co-wrote; and\u00a0<em>A Boy and His Dog<\/em>, which he said served as George Miller\u2019s inspiration for\u00a0<em>The Road Warrior<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter doing\u00a0<em>A Boy and His Dog<\/em>, I had a whole bunch of offers to direct and more money than it cost to make the picture, for chrissakes,\u201d he said. \u201cBut I couldn\u2019t see working all that time and all the effort to make that. So I just kept saying, \u2018No,\u2019 and I finally just said, \u2018To hell with it,\u2019 and just stopped and went on with the acting. Because by then I could pretty well pick and choose what I wanted to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Survivors also include his children, Randy, Steve and Mindy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>L.Q.
