The second happened in a bar in Pietermaritzburg, killing four more people and wounding eight others.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe primary investigation suggests that these people were enjoying themselves here, in a licensed tavern operating within the right hours,\u201d Gauteng province police commissioner Lt. Gen. Elias Mawela <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/africa-shootings-johannesburg-south-4feca8d299899419cc2bf52bf1589246\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> the Associated Press regarding the first shooting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of a sudden they heard some gunshots, that is when people tried to run out of the tavern. We don\u2019t have the full details at the moment of what is the motive, and why they were targeting these people,\u201d he added. \u201cYou can see that a high caliber firearm was used and it was shooting randomly. You can see that every one of those people were struggling to get out of the tavern.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The police have opened investigations into at least 14 cases of murder and nine cases of attempted murder, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saps.gov.za\/newsroom\/msspeechdetail.php?nid=40870\">statement<\/a>\u00a0from local law enforcement. No arrests have yet been announced in the Soweto shooting, with police asking witnesses to provide any available information to help.<\/p>\n<p>Multiple rifles and 9 mm pistols were used in the shooting, according to the report. It is still unclear what weapons were used in the second shooting attack.<\/p>\n<p>The twin shootings also follow the deaths of more than 20 people <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/africa-south-2eb16378a624b57df794d1bf840765eb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found dead<\/a> at a nightclub in East London, South Africa. The cause of death for the victims remains under investigation, as the bodies did not include marks of visible injuries.<\/p>\n<p>The dual shootings occurred just days after a mass shooting at Denmark\u2019s shopping mall that killed\u00a0multiple people at a location near a scheduled Sunday evening Harry Styles concert.<\/p>\n<p>The incident occurred at the Fields Mall in Copenhagen. Three people were killed in the attack, and around two dozen were injured, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/denmark-theaters-closed-in-honor-of-mall-shooting-victims\/2022\/07\/05\/07305958-fc59-11ec-b39d-71309168014b_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to<\/a> the Washington Post.<\/p>\n<p>The tragic events also include a string of mass shootings across the U.S., including the deaths of 19 children and two teachers at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, in May. And on July 4, eight people were killed and 68 were injured in a mass shooting during an Independence Day parade in Highland Park, Illinois.<\/p>\n<p>The shootings have led to calls for new firearms laws to help reduce gun violence.\u00a0On June 25, President Joe Biden signed the first major federal gun reform in three decades, with the legislation passing after<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__large__nEccO body__base__22dCE body__large_body__FV5_X article-body__element__2p5pI\" data-testid=\"paragraph-1\">\u201cGod willing, it\u2019s going to save a lot of lives,\u201d Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/biden-signs-bipartisan-gun-safety-bill-into-law-2022-06-25\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> at the White House after signing the bill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__large__nEccO body__base__22dCE body__large_body__FV5_X article-body__element__2p5pI\" data-testid=\"paragraph-1\">\u201cI know there\u2019s much more work to do, and I\u2019m never gonna give up.
