The rocket launched just 100 miles from NASA\u2019s Langley Research Center, the office where Johnson worked.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson\u2019s expertise in mathematics contributed to the success of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/image-feature\/liftoff-of-john-glenns-friendship-7-feb-20-1962\">Glenn\u2019s launch<\/a> on February 20, 1962, when he became the first American to orbit planet Earth. The rocket\u2019s trajectory was primarily calculated by computers, but Glenn asked for Johnson to check the orbital calculations by hand.<\/p>\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The John Glenn Story\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YpJFdudBNUw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p>The launch also occurred close to the one-year anniversary of Johnson\u2019s death. She was 101-years-old. Johnson\u2019s math also assisted NASA in sending astronauts to the moon and back.<\/p>\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"What Matters - Katherine Johnson: NASA Pioneer and &quot;Computer&quot;\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/r8gJqKyIGhE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer work was to take a Monroe or Freedom calculator,\u201d Johnson\u2019s daughter, Joylette Goble, said. \u201cAnd do the big equations, which could be a page long.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The rocket is expected to reach the International Space Station on Monday and marks the second delivery the International Space Station received this week.
