When she was finally diagnosed with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4472946\/\">multiple paraganglioma<\/a>, Vesce said her \u201cheart just dropped.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI felt a sense of relief, honestly,\u201d the model said. \u201cFor six months, I felt like doctors thought I was crazy. From the outside, I looked perfectly healthy. But I just knew something was wrong with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Doctors found Vesce had nerve damage and was losing her hearing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just thought maybe I hurt my ear somehow during NBA dance practice,\u201d said Vesce, who was a dancer for the Charlotte Hornets from 2014-2017. \u201cBut, eventually, I was told, \u2018We found a mass in your head.\u2019 My heart just dropped.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">SI Swim model recalls overcoming \u2018nightmare\u2019 brain tumor <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/lq1OQYojDC\">https:\/\/t.co\/lq1OQYojDC<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Fox News (@FoxNews) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FoxNews\/status\/1545776071039148035?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 9, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was 23 years old,\u201d Vesce continued. \u201cI\u2019m healthy. How could this happen? In one way, it was good to know that I wasn\u2019t going crazy. But, by then, it had spread down my neck into my carotid artery. I went from living my best life, traveling, modeling. Then I get hit with something insane. I was relieved to finally have an answer, but I didn\u2019t know how to react. It was like my nightmare, a nightmare coming to fruition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vesce, now an advocate for the National Brain Tumor Society, was treated at Duke University Hospital, where she volunteered to participate in a study involving rare tumors, Fox News noted.<\/p>\n<p>The treatment was a \u201cterrifying\u201d prospect, Vesce said, but she tried to stay as positive as possible, noting that \u201cstress can trigger brain tumor growth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was told I needed surgery, or I would be at risk of paralysis or even death,\u201d she recalled. \u201cI was terrified, but I did it \u2013 May 2017. I went through a six-week recovery time to eat and walk again. It took forever just to stand up. I thought it would be all over. But then I ended up doing 30 rounds of experimental radiation treatment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fast-forward to 2022, and Vesce is doing \u201cgreat,\u201d while routinely checking on her health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m doing great,\u201d she told Fox News. \u201cI mean, I lost 100% of hearing in my right ear. I do go for routine MRI checkups because they have to leave remnants of the tumor in my head. It wrapped around my brain stem. There are a lot of nerves involved and if they end up touching it, I could be instantly paralyzed or have a stroke.\u00a0So there is some of it in my head that gets monitored by an MRI. But luckily, everything\u2019s been stable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The model emphasized that it was her late mother who kept her motivated during the hard times.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a dark period in my life,\u201d she said. \u201cI have always been pretty positive, maybe a little stubborn. But my mother, my best friend, she kept me motivated.
