Of those infected, only four people are known to have survived.<\/p>\n<p data-t=\"{\" n>\u201cIt\u2019s strongly believed by public health experts that the lake is a likely source, but we are not limiting the investigation to that source and it\u2019s not confirmed,\u201d Lisa Cox, spokeswoman for the <a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/health.mo.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\">Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services<\/a>\u00a0told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.desmoinesregister.com\/story\/news\/2022\/07\/08\/brain-eating-amoeba-naegleria-fowleri-infects-missouri-man-iowa-lake-of-three-fires-beach-closed\/10011648002\/\">Des Moines Register<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cAdditional public water sources in Missouri are being tested as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Beach closed after brain-eating amoeba confirmed <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/VC2v1ZCXKb\">https:\/\/t.co\/VC2v1ZCXKb<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Fox News (@FoxNews) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FoxNews\/status\/1545872938477535232?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 9, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-t=\"{\" n>Authorities believe the swimmer, who is in intensive care, was likely exposed to the amoeba in the Iowa lake over the last two weeks of June, though they didn\u2019t have specific dates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-t=\"{\" n>Naegleria fowleri is\u00a0typically found in\u00a0warm freshwater, including lakes, rivers, and ponds. It can\u00a0\u201ccause a rare,\u00a0life-threatening infection of the brain called primary amebic meningoencephalitis,\u201d Missouri health officials said in a news release.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-t=\"{\" n>Humans can be infected when water containing the amoeba enters through the nose, usually during swimming or diving in lakes and rivers. Once in the body, the amoeba\u00a0makes its way into the brain, where begins attacking tissue. Symptoms include\u00a0fever,\u00a0stiff neck,\u00a0vomiting,\u00a0seizures,\u00a0severe headache,\u00a0altered mental status, and\u00a0hallucinations, according to the Missouri Department of Health and Human Senior Services.<\/p>\n<p data-t=\"{\" n>The agency recommends using nose clips when swimming in fresh water, not submerging your head in \u201chot springs and other untreated thermal waters\u201d and not participating in \u201cwater-related activities in warm freshwater during periods of high-water temperature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-t=\"{\" n>In May, a man in Pakistan died and another became seriously ill after they were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/brain-eating-amoeba-pakistan-naegleria-fowleri-cases-infection-1703795\">infected with the brain-eating amoeba<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-t=\"{\" n>The infection cannot spread from one person to another and cannot infect people who simply drink contaminated water, health officials said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Missouri resident who swam in an Iowa lake has been infected by a rare and extremely lethal brain-eating amoeba, health officials said.
