However, the National Socialists also had economic and political policies, policies many just assume were either free market or New Deal-style public works projects like the Autobahn. But Nazi policy was not so cut-and-dry.<\/p>\n<p>The Nazis were socialists, and it showed in many of the\u00a0policies they implemented after coming to power in 1933. First, like the Soviets, the Nazis initiated a war on private property.\u00a0Not surprisingly, property rights were\u00a0severely curbed by National <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-socialism\">Socialism<\/a> in the name of public welfare.<\/p>\n<p>How did the National Socialists combat private property in Germany? The first step came shortly after the Nazis took control, when they abolished private property. Article 153 of the Weimar constitution guaranteed private property, with expropriation only to occur within the due process of the law, but this article was nullified by a decree on Feb. 28, 1933.<\/p>\n<p>With this, the new National Socialist government had complete control of private property in Germany. While it did not take complete control of the land as the Bolsheviks did in Russia in 1917, the Nazis issued quotas for industries and farms and later reorganized all industry into corporations run by members of the Nazi Party.<\/p>\n<h2>The War on Business<\/h2>\n<p>Peter Temin\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=pafftgAACAAJ&#038;dq=Soviet+and+Nazi+Economic+Planning+in+the+1930s&#038;hl=en&#038;newbks=1&#038;newbks_redir=1&#038;sa=X&#038;ved=2ahUKEwj07MWyw9j4AhVcl2oFHf6bC1YQ6AF6BAgCEAE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wrote<\/a>\u00a0about this in \u201cSoviet and Nazi Economic Planning\u201d:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cBoth governments reorganized industry into larger units, ostensibly to increase state control over economic activity. The Nazis reorganized industry into 13 administrative groups with a larger number of subgroups to create a private hierarchy for state control. The state could therefore direct a firm\u2019s activities without acquiring direct ownership of enterprises. The pre-existing tendency to form cartels was encouraged to eliminate competition that would destabilize prices.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Nazis, ironically, called this reorganization \u201cprivatization,\u201d although the owners of these corporations were either removed from board positions and replaced by Nazi Party members\u00a0or sold out and became Nazi Party members. They included IG Farben and the Junkers airplane factory. IG Farben was a chemical company founded in 1925 by Carl Bosch and Carl Duisberg, who were both Jewish, and had a capitalization of around a billion marks by 1926. By 1938, all of the company\u2019s Jewish workers had been purged and the supervisory board replaced by Nazis (see Joseph Borkin\u2019s book\u00a0\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/crimepunishmento0000bork\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Crime and Punishment of I.G. Farben<\/a>\u201c).<\/p>\n<p>IG Farben was a clear example of the reorganization of industry the Nazis undertook for their benefit. Sybille Steinbacher, a professor of Holocaust studies, wrote about the public-private partnership in her book \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=plcJycHNIpMC&#038;printsec=frontcover&#038;dq=steinbacher+auschwitz&#038;hl=en&#038;newbks=1&#038;newbks_redir=1&#038;sa=X&#038;ved=2ahUKEwiulLiOxNj4AhWTgGoFHdXcB-wQuwV6BAgFEAc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Auschwitz<\/a>\u201c:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cOtto Ambros and IG Farben director Fritz ter Meer held a board meeting in Berlin with Carl Krauch who was not only a member of the board of directors of IG Farben, but also a member of the circle of industrialists around Reichsfurhrer-SS known as Himmler\u2019s \u2018Circle of Friends.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>After the Nazis took power, this kind of cooperation was common. Private businesses became merely public entities, and industrialists who\u00a0resisted the Nazi commissars and their policies were removed from their positions and their businesses seized.<\/p>\n<p>Junkers airplane factory did not fare much better, <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=pafftgAACAAJ&#038;dq=Soviet+and+Nazi+Economic+Planning+in+the+1930s&#038;hl=en&#038;newbks=1&#038;newbks_redir=1&#038;sa=X&#038;ved=2ahUKEwj07MWyw9j4AhVcl2oFHf6bC1YQ6AF6BAgCEAE\">according to Temin<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cProf. Junkers of the Junkers airplane factory refused to follow the government\u2019s bidding in 1934. The Nazis thereupon took over the plant, compensating Junkers for his loss. This was the context in which other contracts were negotiated.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This Nazi war on business left industrialists and other businessmen worried that they would have their livelihoods taken from them, as G\u00fcnter Reimann explains in \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=zpQJMaz-fTIC&#038;printsec=frontcover&#038;dq=The+Vampire+Economy:+Doing+Business+under+Fascism&#038;hl=en&#038;newbks=1&#038;newbks_redir=1&#038;sa=X&#038;ved=2ahUKEwjy8Mfow9j4AhW9omoFHeDKCOgQuwV6BAgDEAc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Vampire Economy<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reimann\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=zpQJMaz-fTIC&#038;printsec=frontcover&#038;dq=The+Vampire+Economy:+Doing+Business+under+Fascism&#038;hl=en&#038;newbks=1&#038;newbks_redir=1&#038;sa=X&#038;ved=2ahUKEwjy8Mfow9j4AhW9omoFHeDKCOgQuwV6BAgDEAc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">quotes<\/a>\u00a0a letter from a German businessman to an American businessman:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe difference between this and the Russian system is much less than you think, despite the fact that officially we are still independent businessmen.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The letter continues:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cSome businessmen have even started studying Marxist theories, so that they will have a better understanding of the present economic system.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This German businessman also complained\u00a0of \u201carbitrary government decisions concerning quantity, quality, and prices of foreign raw materials.\u201d But businessmen were not the only members of the private sector who faced mass amounts of bureaucracy and control. The farmers faced it as well.<\/p>\n<h2>The War on Agriculture<\/h2>\n<p>When the Nazis came to power in 1933, a major interest for them was Lebensraum (living space) for the \u201cpure\u201d German citizen. Professor Adam Tooze talks about the \u201chereditary farm\u201d in his book \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=-h_Z_KK0MQUC&#038;printsec=frontcover&#038;dq=Wages+of+Destruction&#038;hl=en&#038;newbks=1&#038;newbks_redir=1&#038;sa=X&#038;ved=2ahUKEwiP3ri1xNj4AhU_mGoFHXENDlIQuwV6BAgFEAc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wages of Destruction<\/a>\u201c:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cFor the purpose of protecting the peasantry as the \u2018Blood Source of the German People,\u2019 the law proposed to create a new category of farm, the Erbhof (hereditary farm), protected against all debt insulated from market forces.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>These farms were to be passed down from generation to generation to keep the soil \u201cpure,\u201d and Reich officials even thought that \u201cErbhof farmers should assume collective responsibility\u00a0for each other\u2019s debts.\u201d This policy was introduced and supported by the Reich central bank and Reichsn\u00e4hrstand (RNS, State Food Society) officials.<\/p>\n<p>Farming price subsidies were also common in the Nazi Reich even before World War II broke out. The RNS\u00a0was created to fix prices and create production controls in agriculture. In his book, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=hOIpGubiiZYC&#038;printsec=frontcover&#038;dq=Hitler%27s+Beneficiaries&#038;hl=en&#038;newbks=1&#038;newbks_redir=1&#038;sa=X&#038;ved=2ahUKEwiTzYzZxNj4AhUHj2oFHeofCkIQuwV6BAgGEAc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hitler\u2019s Beneficiaries<\/a>,\u201d German historian G\u00f6tz Aly\u00a0describes the measures the German government took in the farming sector.<\/p>\n<p>G\u00f6tz\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=hOIpGubiiZYC&#038;printsec=frontcover&#038;dq=Hitler%27s+Beneficiaries&#038;hl=en&#038;newbks=1&#038;newbks_redir=1&#038;sa=X&#038;ved=2ahUKEwiTzYzZxNj4AhUHj2oFHeofCkIQuwV6BAgGEAc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">states<\/a>, \u201cThe prices producers were paid for milk and potatoes were raised by 25 to 35 percent in the course of the war.\u201d These subsidies would cause shortages as early as August 1939, when meat and egg rationing was imposed to keep the industry\u00a0focused on grain production.<\/p>\n<h2>Life in Prewar Germany<\/h2>\n<p>In high school history textbooks, very few pages are dedicated to prewar Germany (1933\u20131939). However, two details are always covered: the Night of Broken Glass (Kristallnacht), which saw thousands of Jewish businesses vandalized and destroyed, and the Autobahn, a massive public works program that improved many lives and made travel easy.<\/p>\n<p>Because of this, people may reach the conclusion that prewar life was bad for the Jews, but beneficial for non-Jewish citizens. It is true that Jews suffered immensely, not only socially but also economically. At the start of 1933, there were an estimated hundred thousand Jewish businesses;\u00a0by 1938, only 39,552 remained. In the same year, a capital levy was put on Jews;\u00a0they needed to register all their assets with the local tax office, which placed a 20 percent and later a 25 percent capital levy on them.<\/p>\n<p>But for ordinary non-Jewish citizens, life was also hard. Private sale negotiations were subject to official rules, these rules being set selling prices for whatever good someone had. If a dealer wanted to increase his prices, he must get a special permit from a price commissar, who needed a detailed statement of necessity and other data such as production and distribution costs.<\/p>\n<p>R.J. Overy\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=ksK_tW1qYRQC&#038;printsec=frontcover&#038;dq=War+and+Economy+in+the+Third+Reich&#038;hl=en&#038;newbks=1&#038;newbks_redir=1&#038;sa=X&#038;ved=2ahUKEwibm_n7z9j4AhU9nGoFHV_4BNYQuwV6BAgDEAc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">War and Economy in the Third Reich<\/a><em>\u201c<\/em>\u00a0and Richard Evans\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=iG4ud0PxeDMC&#038;printsec=frontcover&#038;dq=Third+Reich+in+power&#038;hl=en&#038;newbks=1&#038;newbks_redir=1&#038;sa=X&#038;ved=2ahUKEwj9g8Psz9j4AhU0nWoFHT0UAdcQuwV6BAgFEAc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Third Reich in Power<\/a>\u201d talk about the shortages that came out of the industries at these times. In 1936, German steel producers were only producing 26 percent of Germany\u2019s domestic output requirement. The German government in 1937 would encourage citizens to hand in their scrap metal, and in the same year, authorities including the Hitler Youth would search people\u2019s homes for old metal keys.<\/p>\n<p>Metal was strictly rationed, and fines were handed out to building contractors who installed metal central heating pipes. Iron lamp posts and railings were replaced with wooden ones, but this was halted when there was a\u00a0wood shortage, which also led to a paper shortage.<\/p>\n<p>All of this happened in 1937, two years before the war. Building projects had to cut back on wood and people were encouraged to burn peat instead of wood. Even coal was rationed. All industries\u00a0under price controls\u00a0were in the same situation,\u00a0such as agriculture, where egg and dairy shortages led to the distribution of ration coupons.<\/p>\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p>The Nazi government took control of the economy, which is what one expects from socialism.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the U.S. economy today has similarities to the Nazi economy, from vast subsidies to price controls, and\u00a0\u201cstakeholder\u201d advocates making\u00a0even wilder demands.
