If it passes the lower chamber, it will be on the ballot in November.<\/p>\n<p>Blair County Republican Sen. Judy Ward, the bill\u2019s sponsor, said the measure simply maintains the status quo.<\/p>\n<p>In 1985,\u00a0the Pennsylvania Supreme Court held that the state constitution does not require taxpayer funding of abortions, in line with federal precedent.<\/p>\n<p>The amendments proposed in SB 106 would not change the Abortion Control Act, nor does the language ban abortions, Ward\u2019s office <a href=\"https:\/\/senatorjudyward.com\/2022\/07\/08\/senate-approves-wards-pro-life-constitutional-amendment\/\">said in a release<\/a>. Instead, the legislation preserves critical checks and balances and ensures that abortion laws are made by elected officials.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cState law regarding such an important issue as this should not be made by unelected judges,\u201d Ward said. \u201cThis legislation guarantees that the job of making abortion policy will stay in the hands of the people\u2019s elected representatives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pennsylvania\u2019s Democratic state Senate leader, Jay Costa, of the 43rd district, challenged this assertion on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf that\u2019s the truth\u2014and this really doesn\u2019t have anything to do with boldly restricting the right of bodily autonomy\u2014it should be done through the regular legislative process,\u201d Costa wrote on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>He argued that Pennsylvania Republicans were using the constitution \u201cas a tool\u201d to ensure people did not have the right to an abortion in the state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we are doing here today is egregious,\u201d he said. \u201cThe constitution is meant to protect the liberties and rights of Pennsylvanians, not to be used as a tool to enshrine prohibiting rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ward accused opponents of the bill of wielding \u201cpassionate and misleading rhetoric\u201d to<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pennsylvania\u2019s state Senate on Friday passed a bill to amend\u00a0the state\u2019s constitution to declare that there is no constitutional right to taxpayer-funded abortion nor other rights to abortion in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
