The speech took place at Chappelle\u2019s alma mater, the Duke Ellington School of the Arts in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/washington-d-c\">Washington, D.C<\/a>. During the conversation, Chappelle addressed the controversy and backlash.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll the kids were screaming and yelling. I remember, I said to the kids, I go, \u2018Well, okay, well what do you guys think I did wrong?\u2019 And a line formed. These kids said everything about gender, and this and that and the other, but they didn\u2019t say anything about art,\u201d Chappelle said, per <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2022\/tv\/news\/dave-chappelle-netflix-speech-whats-in-a-name-1235311467\/\">Variety<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd this is my biggest gripe with this whole controversy with \u2018The Closer\u2019: That you cannot report on an artist\u2019s work and remove artistic nuance from his words. It would be like if you were reading a newspaper and they say, \u2018Man Shot in the Face by a Six-Foot Rabbit Expected to Survive,\u2019 you\u2019d be like, \u2018Oh my god,\u2019 and they never tell you it\u2019s a Bugs Bunny cartoon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/comedy\">comedian<\/a> described how the student criticism affected him personally.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I heard those talking points coming out of these children\u2019s faces, that really, sincerely, hurt me,\u201d Chappelle continued. \u201cBecause I know those kids didn\u2019t come up with those words. I\u2019ve heard those words before. The more you say I can\u2019t say something, the more urgent it is for me to say it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd it has nothing to do with what you\u2019re saying I can\u2019t say. It has everything to do with my right, my freedom, of artistic expression,\u201d he continued. \u201cThat is valuable to me. That is not severed from me. It\u2019s worth protecting for me, and it\u2019s worth protecting for everyone else who endeavors in our noble, noble professions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd these kids didn\u2019t understand that they were instruments of oppression. And I didn\u2019t get mad at them,\u201d Chappelle concluded. \u201cThey\u2019re kids. They\u2019re freshmen. They\u2019re not ready yet. They don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 48-year-old comedian was annihilated by critics in October following the release of his comedy special, \u201cThe Closer.\u201d In it, Chappelle pokes fun at radical gender theory and sticks up for J.K. Rowling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGender is a fact,\u201d Chappelle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/gender-is-a-fact-dave-chappelle-bucks-the-left-on-gender-defends-j-k-rowling-in-new-special\">said in part<\/a> during the special. \u201cEvery human being in this room, every human being on Earth, had to pass through the legs of a woman to be on Earth. That is a fact. Now, I am not saying that to say trans women aren\u2019t women, I am just saying that those p*****s that they got \u2026 you know what I mean? I\u2019m not saying it\u2019s not p***y, but it\u2019s Beyond P***y or Impossible P***y.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny of you who have ever watched me know that I have never had a problem with transgender people.
