There is ongoing criminal prosecution and criminal investigation,\u201d he said Wednesday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/highland-park-suspects-father-responsibility-attack-police-said-rcna37093\">NBC reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/robert-crimo-father-26.jpg\"><\/a><figcaption>Bobby Crimo\u2019s father sponsored his son when he applied for a firearm owner\u2019s identification card.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">DANIEL WILLIAM MCKNIGHT<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIssues of culpability, liability, who may have responsibility in certain circumstances, are all part and parcel of that process. Making a conclusionary statement, the Illinois State Police, weighing in on that, is not appropriate,\u201d he said, adding that the matter would ultimately be decided in court.<\/p>\n<p>Lake County State\u2019s Attorney Eric Rinehart said he <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/07\/06\/cops-mum-on-possible-charges-for-highland-park-parade-shooter-robert-crimos-family\/\">didn\u2019t want to comment on the prospect Wednesday<\/a> when asked if investigators are mulling possible criminal charges against Crimo\u2019s family.<\/p>\n<p>Crimo, a 21-year-old wannabe rapper, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/07\/05\/highland-park-parade-shooting-suspect-robert-crimo-threatened-to-kill-his-family-in-2019\/\">threatened \u201ceveryone\u201d in his family in September 2019<\/a>, prompting cops to remove a dagger, sword and 16 knives from his home, Illinois State Police said.<\/p>\n<p>Three months later, Crimo Jr., sponsored his son when he applied for a firearm owner\u2019s identification card \u2013 or FOID.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/07\/Robert-Crimo-84-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"884\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Robert-Crimo-84-4.jpg\" alt=\"Robert Crimo III was labeled a \" clear and present danger \/><\/a><figcaption>Robert Crimo III was labeled a \u201cclear and present danger\u201d after an incident in which he threatened to kill his whole family in 2019.<br \/>\n<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Reuters<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In Illinois, gun buyers under 21 must have a parent or guardian sponsor the application and sign an affidavit stating they\u2019re allowing the buy and agree to be held liable for \u201cany damages\u201d resulting from the applicant\u2019s use of firearms.<\/p>\n<p>Crimo Jr. sponsored the application after his son was deemed a \u201cclear and present\u201d danger by authorities. I think there\u2019s mental illness there, obviously. \u2026 I didn\u2019t see a lot of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Crimo Jr. had hired one of R. Kelly\u2019s attorneys to fight claims he helped his son buy guns, but Steven Greenberg <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SGcrimlaw\/status\/1545179445857755136\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced on Twitter<\/a> late Thursday he was no longer representing him and wife Denise Pesina \u2014 citing an unspecified conflict.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remain hopeful that at some point this terrible tragedy will result in meaningful change,\u201d Greenberg wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The couple\u2019s new attorney, George Gomez, downplayed the possibility of criminal charges being filed against them when reached by The Post early Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt this moment, we\u2019re not concerned about any type of criminal charges,\u201d Gomez said during a brief interview. \u201cThe family is cooperating with local and federal authorities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gomez declined further comment while saying \u201cthings are in the works\u201d without elaborating.<\/p>\n<p>But some legal experts believe charges against the couple could be on the table, including an attorney whose firm has represented many mass shooting victims, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/chicago\/news\/could-highland-park-gunmans-father-face-liability-for-sponsoring-foid-card-one-legal-expert-thinks-so\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CBS Chicago reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cIf the state doesn\u2019t press charges, then they\u2019re admitting that whole statute is a sham,\u201d attorney Stephan Blandin said Crimo Jr.\u2019s FOID sponsorship.<\/p>\n<p>Blandin said he believes there\u2019s a case against Crimo Jr., but believes prosecutors may be hesitant to file charges since gun issues are highly political, CBS Chicago reported.<\/p>\n<p>Asked if Pesina could also be held criminally liable, Blandin stopped short of putting her in her in the same jeopardy as her husband.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m quite positive that there are a number of individuals, who live in that neighborhood, who have information about what took place in the days and weeks and months leading up to this; and that that will come out and come forward,\u201d Blandin told CBS Chicago.<\/p>\n<p><em>With Post wires<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Authorities have not ruled out criminal charges against the father of alleged Highland Park gunman Robert Crimo III \u2013 as his parents retained a new attorney late Thursday.
