Ro Khanna a Democrat from California, has a different strategy. Instead of hiding from the bad news at the pump, he says, Democrats should go on the offensive and identify a culprit of its own: the oil and gas industry. \u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s enough to have a message of \u2018blame Putin,\u2019\u201d Khanna told me on May 3. \u201cSomeone is going to get blamed in American politics\u2026 and that blame should fall on the big oil companies.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnsnews.com\/article\/washington\/melanie-arter\/rep-ro-khanna-urges-biden-increase-domestic-oil-production\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How it\u00a0<em>was<\/em> going<em>:<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) is calling on President Joe Biden to stop exporting oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to other countries and to step up domestic oil production in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Khanna told Fox Business\u2019s \u201cMornings with Maria Bartiromo\u201d on Thursday that the United States has to bring down gas prices \u201cin the short term.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><em>Aaaaaaand<\/em> here\u2019s where we\u2019re at today. Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) takes an opportunity here not to blame American oil companies or Vladimir Putin. Following up on reports that the Biden administration used releases from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) not to increase domestic supply but to increase export sales, Khanna places the blame for high gas prices and airline tickets firmly on Joe Biden. And he\u2019s not too shy to go on Fox News to do it, either:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Ro Khanna (D-CA) blasts Biden for exporting American oil to foreign countries while gas prices soar:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don\u2019t understand why we aren\u2019t having a ban on exports\u2026people in my district, they&#8217;re talking to me about gas prices, about higher food prices\u2026airlines getting cancelled.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/4pKyFvynWd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pic.twitter.com\/4pKyFvynWd<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Townhall.com (@townhallcom) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/townhallcom\/status\/1545098036594057217?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">July 7, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hotair.com\/jazz-shaw\/2022\/07\/06\/oil-from-strategic-petroleum-reserve-sold-overseas-n480964\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jazz wrote about the SPR exports yesterday<\/a>, so be sure to read that post first, but it\u2019s worth revisiting here today for at least one detail that didn\u2019t immediately get much attention. <a href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/u-oil-flows-abroad-despite-223017195.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters reported<\/a> that one of the destinations for those sales was China, which is almost inexplicable:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>A million barrels per day of emergency reserves are being released, aimed at lowering fuel prices<\/p>\n<p>But 5 million of them ended up in Europe and Asia in June, blunting the initiative<\/p>\n<p>Customs data shows 470,000 barrels shipped to Italy<\/p>\n<p>Sources say reserve crude was also headed to the Netherlands, India and China<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Why would we sell any of the SPR releases abroad? The exports to the EU may make\u00a0<em>some<\/em> sense as a means to buffer the impact of the sanctions we have imposed on Russia. Their energy sectors have been hardest hit, and we have been trying to support them \u2014 as best we can, since Joe Biden won\u2019t do what Khanna suggested two weeks ago when speaking to Maria Bartiromo.<\/p>\n<p>But why are we selling SPR oil to <em>China<\/em>, of all places? Not only are they our economic rival, they\u2019re buying oil from Russia rather than join in the sanctions intended to cut off funding for the invasion of Ukraine. Put aside the fact that Biden claimed that the SPR oil releases would be used to increase domestic production of gas, diesel, and jet fuel. Even if it was going to be exported, the\u00a0<em>last<\/em> place it should go is China.<\/p>\n<p>This clip from Khanna doesn\u2019t break new ground on that in and of itself, but the focus and tone change from Khanna is well worth noting. Less than two months ago, Khanna wanted to redirect any blame for the supply crisis in gasoline and diesel away from Biden and the White House and apply it fully to \u201cthe big oil companies.\u201d A month after that, Khanna edged up to but didn\u2019t\u00a0<em>quite<\/em> start blaming Biden, but the tacit criticism in telling the White House to start incentivizing domestic production was clear enough. Today, Khanna\u2019s openly criticizing Biden and \u2014 at least in this clip from the conversation \u2014 doesn\u2019t have much to say about the \u201cbig oil companies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s yet another indicator that <a href=\"https:\/\/hotair.com\/ed-morrissey\/2022\/07\/07\/dems-new-midterm-strategy-throw-grandpa-joe-under-the-bus-n481222\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rank-and-file Democrats have changed direction on Biden<\/a>. Khanna isn\u2019t a Squad member by any means, but he\u2019s definitely in the progressive wing of the party and aiming at leadership positions. He\u2019s even <a href=\"https:\/\/whnt.com\/news\/national\/five-under-the-radar-democrats-who-could-run-for-president-in-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hinted at a presidential run<\/a>, which is a bit unlikely at the moment. Khanna\u2019s also lectured his fellow Democrats to \u201crally around\u201d Biden, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/07\/06\/us\/politics\/biden-democrats-action.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">telling the New York Times yesterday<\/a> that they need to focus on \u201cstrengthening this president\u2019s hand.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe Democratic Party needs to rally around President Biden heading into the midterms and heading into the president\u2019s re-election,\u201d he said. \u201cIf people have constructive ideas, they should share them. But they should do it in a spirit of strengthening this president\u2019s hand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Khanna said Democrats need to find constructive ways to channel their anger and frustration about abortion, gas prices and other issues into action. He said the party\u2019s leaders should not hesitate to take actions like imposing more regulations on guns, restoring a woman\u2019s right to an abortion or making it easier for Americans to afford everyday goods.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI guess my view of it is that we will have a lot more success doing that with constructive dialogue with the White House than taking potshots at the president,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>That didn\u2019t last long, did it?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How it started: Rep.
