McCain\u2019s award was presented posthumously to his widow, Cindy McCain, who currently serves as the U.S. Ambassador to\u00a0the UN Agencies in Rome.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will admit to my Democratic friends I\u2019m the guy who encouraged John to go home and run for office, for real, because I knew what incredible courage, intellect and conscience he had,\u201d Biden said. \u201cWe ran against each other, which I didn\u2019t like, on tickets for the highest office in the land. I was a candidate for vice president, he was the candidate for president. I never stopped admiring John. Bush, Biden said of McCain, \u201cYou can\u2019t call yourself a maverick when all you\u2019ve ever been is a sidekick.\u201d He claimed to have stolen the line from Senator Bob Casey (D-PA).<\/p>\n<p>During the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/id\/wbna27085394\">same Florida speech<\/a> \u2014 in October of 2008 \u2014 Biden described \u201cwhat a majority of American people are looking for \u2014 a steady hand, leadership, an optimist; not an angry man, lurching from one position to another.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Biden also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/sppage014-n12405001-oistl\/analysis-long-time-pals-biden-and-mccain-now-spirited-foes-idUSN1240500120081013\">accused McCain<\/a> of attempting to take \u201cthe low road to the highest office in the land,\u201d saying that he was rooting his campaign in personal attacks \u2014 prompting some to believe that their long friendship might not recover.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith friends like Joe Biden, John McCain doesn\u2019t need enemies.
