Commissioner Charles Rettig was appointed by former President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration, established in 1998, independently oversees the IRS. Its actions include investigating allegations of misconduct by IRS employees.<\/p>\n<p>The watchdog could not be reached.<\/p>\n<p>Comey\u2019s 2017 tax return was \u201cselected at random for a compliance research examination\u201d while McCabe\u2019s 2019 return was picked at random for the same type of audit, according to letters from the IRS to the former officials published (<a href=\"https:\/\/int.nyt.com\/data\/documenttools\/comey-mccabe-irs-letters\/f22afabd853ced59\/full.pdf\">pdf<\/a>) by the New York Times.<\/p>\n<p>Comey, an Obama appointee, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/trump-fires-fbi-director-comey_2248823.html\">was fired<\/a> by then-President Trump in May 2017 at the recommendation of the attorney general and deputy attorney general. The officials said Comey was \u201cnot able to effectively lead the bureau.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Comey <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/james-comey-violated-multiple-policies-by-leaking-memos-doj-watchdog-concludes_3061316.html\">was later found<\/a> to have violated FBI policies by providing a memorandum to a friend with instructions for the friend to share the memo with a reporter, and to have kept copies of other memos at his home after his firing.<\/p>\n<p>McCabe, who succeeded Comey, was fired the following year by then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions, a Trump appointee, at the recommendation of the FBI because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/sessions-fired-mccabe-for-authorizing-anti-trump-fbi-official-to-leak-to-press_2468661.html\">he lied to the bureau<\/a> about allowing information to go to a reporter.<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/AP20045621477283_1-1200x800-1.jpg\"><\/a> Then-FBI Acting Director Andrew McCabe listens during a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing on Capitol Hill in Washington on June 7, 2017.
