News<\/a>, Kauffman explained in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/w3ct37m2\">BBC interview<\/a> \u2014 scheduled to air July 11 \u2014 that her concern focused on Chandler Bing (played by actor <a href=\"https:\/\/dailywire.com\/news\/courteney-cox-says-she-doesnt-remember-most-of-friends-except-this-one-trip-to-vegas\/\">Matthew Perry<\/a>), one of the main six characters, who had a biological father who was a transgender woman (played by legendary actress Kathleen Turner). The character went by the stage name Helena Handbasket and headlined a drag burlesque show in Las Vegas.<\/p>\n<p>Her regret, she said, was that throughout the run of the show whenever Helena was mentioned, she was routinely described as \u201cChandler\u2019s father\u201d and referred to with he\/him pronouns. One episode was even titled \u201cThe One with Chandler\u2019s Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe kept referring to [Helena] as \u2018Chandler\u2019s father,\u2019 even though Chandler\u2019s father was trans,\u201d she said, noting that \u201cmother\u201d might have been more appropriate given Helena\u2019s gender identity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPronouns were not yet something that I understood, so we didn\u2019t refer to that character as \u2018she.\u2019 That was a mistake,\u201d Kauffman explained.<\/p>\n<p>Kauffman voiced similar regret in another <a href=\"https:\/\/dailywire.com\/news\/friends-creator-pledges-4-million-to-atone-for-lack-of-black-leads-on-the-series\/\">recent interview<\/a> over the lack of racial diversity on the show. She told the Los Angeles Times that she planned to make reparations, of sorts \u2014 donating $4 million to her alma mater Brandeis University\u2019s African American Studies department to create an endowed professorship. Her hope is that it will help to make up for her failure to push for a more racially diverse cast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve learned a lot in the last 20 years. Admitting and accepting guilt is not easy. It\u2019s painful looking at yourself in the mirror. I\u2019m embarrassed that I didn\u2019t know better 25 years ago,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/entertainment\/friends-marta-kauffman-apologizes-misgendering-chandler-bings-trans-parent?intcmp=tw_fnc\">Fox News<\/a> reported that Kauffman also took responsibility for what she said was her role in contributing to systemic racism in the entertainment industry, saying, \u201cI was unaware of that, which makes me feel stupid. That was a very valid, extremely difficult criticism which still\u2026 I get emotional about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I knew then what I know now, there are certain things I would have changed.
