Two months ago, however, the facility started introducing fatty aji into the animals\u2019 diets \u2014 a less expensive product. Japan \u2014 which faces challenges such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/japanification-how-americas-economy-could-see-a-permanent-decline\">high government debt and low birth rates<\/a> \u2014 is experiencing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/biden-claims-inflation-is-worse-everywhere-but-here-thats-not-even-close-to-true\">less severe<\/a> cost pressures than other leading economies. As of April, inflation in nearby South Korea was 4.8%, while inflation in Germany and the United States was 7.4% and 8.3%, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>The animals that dislike the cheaper food are still permitted to continue eating horse mackerel. \u201cFor the ones who refuse to eat the new fish, we just give them what they used to eat,\u201d Shimamoto assured Vice.<\/p>\n<p>As inflation has continued to rise in the United States, zoos are hiking their admissions costs. The price of an adult ticket for Mesker Park Zoo in Evansville, Indiana, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.14news.com\/2021\/06\/04\/mesker-park-zoo-admission-prices-increasing\/\">increased<\/a> from $9.50 to $11 last year, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/story\/news\/local\/2022\/05\/05\/columbus-zoo-raising-its-rate-first-time-five-years\/9659396002\/\">Columbus Zoo and Aquarium<\/a> in Ohio raised rates from $21.99 to $24.99.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf your admission price is flat and everything else you\u2019re purchasing is going up, that\u2019s pretty much an unsustainable business model,\u201d Columbus Zoo CEO Tom Schmid told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/story\/news\/local\/2022\/05\/05\/columbus-zoo-raising-its-rate-first-time-five-years\/9659396002\/\">The Columbus Dispatch<\/a> earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>Food prices are among the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/here-are-the-products-gutting-your-bank-account-as-inflation-soars\">factors<\/a> contributing to the surge in inflation, thereby forcing Americans to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/americans-changing-the-way-they-buy-groceries-as-inflation-soars-study-finds\">cut their budgets<\/a> for the grocery store. The cost of eggs rose 32% over the past year, according to the U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/cpi.nr0.htm\">Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/a>, while meat, poultry, and fish rose 14.2%, dairy and cereals each rose about 12%, and fruits and vegetables rose 8%.<\/p>\n<p>The cost of food at home, meaning grocery store or supermarket food purchases, saw its fastest increase since April 1979, while the price for food away from home, such as restaurants and school lunches, increased at its most rapid pace since November 1981.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the University of Michigan\u2019s benchmark Survey of Consumers reached its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/consumer-sentiment-plummets-to-lowest-level-since-1950s\">lowest level<\/a> since 1952 in May. Nearly 70% of the United States\u2019 economic output <a href=\"https:\/\/fred.stlouisfed.org\/series\/DPCERE1Q156NBEA\">hinges<\/a> upon consumer spending \u2014 implying that a drop in consumer sentiment could signal a looming recession.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConsumers across income, age, education, geographic region, political affiliation, stockholding and homeownership status all posted large declines,\u201d Survey of Consumers Director Joanna Hsu said in a statement. \u201cAs higher prices become harder to avoid, consumers may feel they have no choice but to adjust their spending patterns, whether through substitution of goods or foregoing purchases altogether.
