Wade<\/em>, declared hypocritically.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve heard the superintendent talk over and over again about the number of law officers in full uniform, in their squad cars, that are being shot at. That says to me that the people who are acting so brazenly have not only no respect for themselves but they don\u2019t have any respect for the institution like the police department, who, men and women, every single day, on every watch, are literally risking life and limb for our safety,\u201d Lightfoot continued.<\/p>\n<p>Then she pronounced, \u201cThe toxicity in our public discourse is a thing that I think we should all be concerned about, right? And it\u2019s ironic, obviously, that we\u2019re having this conversation of what happened on Independence Day. You know, we\u2019re not like a lot of other countries were independence \u2014 their version of Independence Day is marked with, you know, troops and tanks and \u2014 no, what we do in the United States is we come together as a community.\u201d<\/p>\n[embedded content]\n<p>In late June, Lightfoot, incensed by Thomas\u2019 concurring opinion in the case which overturned Roe v. Wade, screamed to a crowd, \u201cF*** Clarence Thomas!\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Chicago mayor Lori Lightfoot takes the stage and proclaims, &#8220;F*ck Clarence Thomas.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/fLur8ussTi\">pic.twitter.com\/fLur8ussTi<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 The Post Millennial (@TPostMillennial) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TPostMillennial\/status\/1541290850109513730?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 27, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In his concurrence, Thomas went farther than the other conservative justices, calling for the concept of substantive due process to be thrown out and reconsidering \u201call of this Court\u2019s substantive due process precedents, including <em>Griswold<\/em>, <em>Lawrence<\/em>, and <em>Obergefell<\/em>.\u201d <em>Griswold v. Connecticu<\/em>t enshrined the \u201cright to privacy,\u201d <em>Lawrence v. Texas<\/em> ruled that people had the right to \u201cseek autonomy\u201d in their private relationships, and <em>Obergefell v. Hodges<\/em> enshrined the right to same-sex marriage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you read Clarence Thomas\u2019 concurrence \u2026 f*** Clarence Thomas,\u201d Lightfoot, who is a lesbian, screamed. She raged, \u201cIf he thinks we are going to stand idly by while they take our rights \u2026 \u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Chicago mayor Lori Lightfoot takes the stage and proclaims, &#8220;F*ck Clarence Thomas.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/fLur8ussTi\">pic.twitter.com\/fLur8ussTi<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 The Post Millennial (@TPostMillennial) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TPostMillennial\/status\/1541290850109513730?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 27, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In Thomas\u2019 concurrence, he first explained the rationale for the conservative justices overturning <em>Roe<\/em> using substantive due process: \u201cThe Court well explains why, under our substantive due process precedents, the purported right to abortion is not a form of \u2018liberty\u2019 protected by the Due Process Clause. Such a right is neither \u2018deeply rooted in this Nation\u2019s history and tradition nor \u2018implicit in the concept of ordered liberty.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But then he segued to decimating the concept of substantive due process: \u201cAs I have previously explained, \u2018substantive due process\u2019 is an oxymoron that \u2018lack[s] any basis in the Constitution.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He quoted himself from another case, <em>McDonald v. Chicago<\/em>: \u201cThe notion that a constitutional provision that guarantees only \u2018process\u2019 before a person is deprived of life, liberty, or property could define the substance of those rights strains credulity for even the most casual user of words.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He noted the other conservative justices\u2019 reluctance to tackle substantive due process: \u201cThe Court today declines to disturb substantive due process jurisprudence generally or the doctrine\u2019s application in other, specific contexts. Cases like <em>Griswold v. Connecticut<\/em>, (right of married persons to obtain contraceptives); <em>Lawrence v. Texas<\/em>, (right to engage in private, consensual sexual acts); and <em>Obergefell v. Hodges<\/em> (right to same-sex marriage), are not at issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then he went where the other justices apparently feared to go: \u201cFor that reason, in future cases, we should reconsider all of this Court\u2019s substantive due process precedents, including <em>Griswold<\/em>, <em>Lawrence<\/em>, and <em>Obergefell<\/em>.
