Bam! Zoom! If you thought Waititi\u2019s \u201cThor: Ragnarok\u201d pushed the MCU\u2019s comedic elements too far, you ain\u2019t seen nuthin\u2019 yet.<\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s a terrible choice Waititi abandons mid-movie. By then, it\u2019s too late.<\/p>\n<p>We reunite with Thor (Chris Hemsworth) in the middle of a God-life crisis. He\u2019s bored, distracted and unable to rouse himself for anything save superheroics. We learn this from a cheeky backstory told by Waititi\u2019s Korg, the craggy creature whose increased presence is a sign of Waititi\u2019s clout.<\/p>\n<p>Translation: No one on set told the director he\u2019s pushing the silliness too far.<\/p>\n<p>The story itself is feather-light and beneath the once-mighty MCU. We learn that Thor\u2019s old flame, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman, game for all the silliness), is suffering from Stage 4 cancer, a plot line played for yuks early on.<\/p>\n<p>Funny!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/critic-v-critic-scorsese-mcu-cinema-debate\/\"><strong>RELATED:\u00a0Critic v. Critic \u2013 The Great Scorsese-MCU Debate\u00a0<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A vague promise made by her old beau transforms her into Thor (Lady Thor? Mighty Thor? Thorina?), a female Asgardian who wields Thor\u2019s old Mjolnir. The new Thor, along with old-school Thor and King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson, having a blast between the goofy asides) must battle a new threat, Gorr the God Butcher.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s Christian Bale, giving a performance that doesn\u2019t belong in this movie. He\u2019s terrifying, a monstrous brute who rises above his limp back story and motivation. Tonally, he\u2019s all wrong for \u201cLove and Thunder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What were Waititi and co-writer Jennifer Kaytin Robinson thinking?<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-captioned=\"\" data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/Ce30E3Pvd6Q\/?utm_source=ig_embed&#038;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"14\">\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Who thinks it\u2019s funny that Thor speaks to his weapon as if it were a new lover jealous of Mjilnor? And the less said about Russell Crowe\u2019s appearance here, the better.<\/p>\n<p>Pow! Bam! Cringe!<\/p>\n<p>Need more tonal screwups? A key plot point focuses on kidnapped children, something the screenplay often plays up for snickers.<\/p>\n<p>Waititi\u2019s wonderful \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/jojo-rabbit-review\/\">Jojo Rabbit<\/a>\u201d turned Hitler into a comic character and squeezed laughs out of Nazi terror tactics. So he knows how to balance uncomfortable material with humor.<\/p>\n<p>He fails at the task here. Completely.<\/p>\n<p>Since this is Marvel Phase 4 we know the woke won\u2019t be left behind. We\u2019re reminded that <em>King<\/em> Valkyrie is a lesbian, twice, and another character\u2019s back story involves two Dads who procreate.<\/p>\n<p>Just know these details are vital to the story and, if left out, would see the entire film collapse upon itself.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Thor: Love and Thunder\u2019s Tessa Thompson and Natalie Portman describe the appeal of getting to play in the MCU from an acting perspective. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/NxeAAws3rw\">https:\/\/t.co\/NxeAAws3rw<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hint: it involves a certain \u201clack of dignity.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/lbzG4ZCivU\">pic.twitter.com\/lbzG4ZCivU<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 IGN (@IGN) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IGN\/status\/1543958069725519873?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 4, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Somewhere along the way \u201cThor: Love and Thunder\u201d realizes you can\u2019t reconcile the farcical first half with Gorr\u2019s menace. So the film all but throws the humor out, focusing on the Thor\/Jane relationship and generic superhero mischief.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s just as jarring, and the switch doesn\u2019t come with bravura action scenes or anything that trumps \u201cRaganrok\u2019s\u201d spin on the MCU.<\/p>\n<p>In fact,\u00a0\u201cRagnarok\u201d proved superior in so many ways, and that\u2019s before you realize \u201cLove and Thunder\u201d squanders a Guardians of the Galaxy group cameo.<\/p>\n<p>How is that even possible?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/tim-burton-batman-made-mcu\/\"><strong>RELATED: How Tim Burton\u2019s \u2018Batman\u2019 Made the MCU Possible<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Maybe Waititi has Patty Jenkins Syndrome. The \u201cWonder Woman\u201d director delivered a grand superhero romp in 2017, and then followed it up with one of the worst films in recent memory, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodintoto.com\/wonder-woman-1984-review\/\">Wonder Woman 1984.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Did her ego get too big for the set? Was she given too much authority behind the scenes? We\u2019ll never know, but it\u2019s fair to ask similar questions of Waititi after watching \u201cLove and Thunder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something went seriously wrong between \u201cRagnarok\u201d and \u201cThunder,\u201d and the mystery behind it might be more entertaining than the film itself.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HiT or Miss:<\/strong> \u201cThor: Love and Thunder\u201d is a crushing disappointment, doubling down on \u201cRagnarok\u2019s\u201d comedic beats without the wit and style to make them soar.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We thought \u201cBatman and Robin\u201d would forever prevent superhero films from aping \u201960s-era camp.
