Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez with fines for dodging tax warrants filed against her former business five years ago.<\/p>\n<p>The state filed a tax warrant against Brook Avenue Press \u2014 a children-oriented publishing house Ocasio-Cortez founded in 2012 \u2014 on July 6, 2017, to <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2019\/09\/23\/overdue-tax-bill-ocasio-cortezs-unpaid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">collect<\/a> $1,618 in unpaid corporate taxes, the Washington Examiner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/house\/alexandria-ocasio-cortez-fine-unpaid-tax-warrant-irs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a>. The tax warrant has increased 52% to cost $2,461 due to the representative not paying the taxes.<\/p>\n<p>New York issues tax warrants if businesses \u201cfail to timely resolve\u201d their debt and do not respond to their notices and will proceed with \u201cfurther collection action,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tax.ny.gov\/enforcement\/collections\/tax-warrants.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according<\/a> to the New York Department of Taxation and Finance.<\/p>\n<p>The state filed the tax warrant nearly two months after she launched her campaign for the U.S. House of Representatives against former Democratic New York Rep. Joe Crowley, the Examiner reported. A representative for the Bronx County Clerk\u2019s Office told the outlet that the warrant remains open.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">NEW: New York state slapped a $1,618 tax warrant against AOC\u2019s defunct business, Brook Avenue Press, five years ago today.<\/p>\n<p>AOC has yet to pay a penny of her overdue corporate tax bill. The business has been closed for several years now, and so we believe that the state Tax Department has continued to collect the franchise tax in error,\u201d Ocasio-Cortez spokeswoman Lauren Hitt\u00a0<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/05\/17\/aoc-owes-2000-in-unpaid-taxes-from-failed-business-venture\/\">told<\/a>\u00a0the\u00a0New York Post in May 2020. \u201cAs anyone who\u2019s tried to contest a tax bill in error knows, it takes time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her 2018 <a href=\"https:\/\/disclosures-clerk.house.gov\/public_disc\/financial-pdfs\/2018\/10026781.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">financial disclosure,<\/a> filed in 2019, lists her as the founder of the Brook Avenue Press. The state dissolved the company using a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tax.ny.gov\/bus\/doingbus\/tr125.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">procedure<\/a> used for businesses that do not pay taxes in at least two years or fail to file a tax return.<\/p>\n<p>The New York representative <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2019\/01\/04\/ocasio-cortez-70-percent-tax\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">called<\/a> for raising taxes to 60% \u2013 70% for the people at the very top to pay for her climate agenda.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut once you get to, like, the tippy tops on your 10 millionth dollar, sometimes you see tax rates as high as 60 or 70 percent,\u201d she told CNN\u2019s Anderson\u2019s Cooper in 2019. \u201cAs you climb up this ladder, you should be contributing more. \u2026 If that\u2019s what radical means, call me a radical.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The representative appeared at the annual Met Gala <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/09\/13\/ocasio-cortez-wears-tax-rich-dress-elite-met-gala\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wearing<\/a> a white dress with the words \u201cTax The Rich\u201d written across the back in large, red letters. The dress\u2019 designer, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/09\/20\/aurora-james-aoc-tax-the-rich-dress\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aurora James<\/a>, received 15 tax warrants since 2015 for her company, Cultural Brokerage Agency, withholding a total of $14,798 in taxes from its employee paychecks between 2018 and 2019. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) placed six federal liens on the company for failing to pay a sufficient sum of money that is intended to be taken out of the employees\u2019 paychecks.<\/p>\n<p>Ocasio-Cortez\u2019 office did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New York state has hit Democratic New York Rep.
