His dedication and leadership will inspire OPEC for many years and decades to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Barkindo assumed the helm of OPEC in 2016 after working as the group managing director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation. He played a key role in producing the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opec.org\/opec_web\/en\/press_room\/3545.htm\">OPEC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opec.org\/opec_web\/en\/about_us\/25.htm\">member nations<\/a> such as Iran, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Kuwait, and Iraq, OPEC officials set oil production targets in a bid to control worldwide energy supply. The alliance accounts for over 80% of the world\u2019s proven <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opec.org\/opec_web\/en\/data_graphs\/330.htm#:~:text=According%20to%20current%20estimates%2C%2080.4,67.1%25%20of%20the%20OPEC%20total.\">oil reserves<\/a>, with 67% coming from Middle Eastern members.<\/p>\n<p>Hours before his death, Barkindo delivered a speech at an energy summit in Abuja, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/nigeria\">Nigeria<\/a>, where he remarked that the oil industry is \u201cunder siege.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a very short timespan, the industry has been hit by two major cycles \u2014 the severe market downturn in 2015 and 2016, and the even more far-reaching impact of the COVID-19 pandemic,\u201d Barkindo said, per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/07\/06\/energy\/barkindo-opec-secretary-general-death\/index.html\">CNN Business<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the past six years, we have witnessed both challenging and historic moments, which have underscored time and again the importance of cooperation and teamwork,\u201d Barkindo also said, adding that his time as the leader of OPEC was the \u201chonor of a lifetime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The death of Barkindo occurs as international oil prices remain volatile.
