At the time, documents suggested the agency spent $$1.7 million on animal experimentation between October 2018 and February 2019 that force-fed beagles an experimental drug for several weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Lawmakers last year expressed horror at a procedure used in the experiment. They noted that an invoice to NIAID involved an item called a \u201ccordectomy,\u201d also known as devocalization or de-barking. The procedure involves slitting a dog\u2019s vocal cords to remove its ability to bark, howl, or cry.<\/p>\n<p>And in May of this year, reports said that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) had allocated $1.8 million to test more experimental drugs on beagles, prompting a letter from Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) to use other testing models. Ernst said she received a letter from NIAID and the NIH last week saying those tests wouldn\u2019t be carried out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Fauci was barking up the wrong tree when he decided to use government dollars on dog testing,\u201d Ernst said in a statement. \u201cThese inhumane practices have no place in our government\u2014much less on the taxpayer\u2019s dime.
