She told the publication how she came to terms with her addiction and the fact that she needed help.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI put a lot of work into myself and I had to be willing to be incredibly honest,\u201d the \u201cScream 4\u201d actress said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis hasn\u2019t been easy and there were a lot of ups and downs,\u201d she continued. \u201cBut I don\u2019t regret even the ugliest things that have happened to me. I feel incredibly accomplished. And I feel like I have a second chance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Panettiere got famous at an early age and described being offered \u201chappy pills\u201d by someone on her team when she was just 15 years old. \u201cThey were to make me peppy during interviews,\u201d the actress explained. \u201cI had no idea that this was not an appropriate thing, or what door that would open for me when it came to my addiction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy saving grace is that I couldn\u2019t be messy while on set and working,\u201d the \u201cHeroes\u201d star continued. \u201cBut things kept getting out of control [off set]. And as I got older, the drugs and alcohol became something I almost couldn\u2019t live without.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The mom of one said some of the worst years were during her stint on the hit drama \u201cNashville.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose were really tough years,\u201d said Panettiere, who suffered from severe postpartum depression after Kaya was born. \u201cI could relate to a lot of those storylines like the alcoholism and postpartum depression. They hit close to home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The actress got candid about her experiences dealing with negative feelings after her daughter was born.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never had the feeling that I wanted to harm my child, but I didn\u2019t want to spend any time with her,\u201d Panettiere said to People. \u201cThere was just this gray color in my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would have the shakes when I woke up and could only function with sipping alcohol,\u201d the actress continued.
