We must vastly increase awareness and education about this red flag law called the Illinois Firearm Restraining Order,\u201d Rinehart said. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"T5Iz2MsauoiDLypeVKhQkt3P79xwRA\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">After announcing that the Highland Park shooter will be charged with 7 counts of murder, the State Attorney Eric Rinehart praises red flag laws and calls for a nationwide assault weapons ban both of which are currently on the books in Illinois and Highland Park and failed. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/bWEA8MZuHm\">pic.twitter.com\/bWEA8MZuHm<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Greg Price (@greg_price11) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/greg_price11\/status\/1544452409342271490?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 5, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>According to Rinehart, the red flag law was designed to \u201censure the safety of the individual and those around them\u201d by confiscating guns and preventing certain people from buying guns. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt allows individuals to stabilize their treatments \u2014 excuse me, stabilize their behavior \u2014 seek treatment, and access other resources that our community must invest in to give those who need help,\u201d Rinehart continued. \u201cSeparate from these red flag laws, which are very powerful in Illinois, we should also ban assault weapons in Illinois and beyond.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The first and most pressing question of all: If Illinois gun laws are so good, why wasn\u2019t Crimo, who was labeled a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/07\/05\/us\/robert-e-crimo-highland-park-suspect\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">clear and present danger<\/a>\u201d to the community long before he shot up the parade and fled wearing women\u2019s clothing, stopped by the state? If red flag laws are the answer to preventing deadly shootings, which we know they aren\u2019t because they lack <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/opinion\/tucker-carlson-red-flag-laws-mass-shootings-due-process\">due process<\/a> and are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/why-does-aclu-oppose-some-californias-new-gun-laws-1464920\">susceptible to politically motivated exploitation<\/a>, why didn\u2019t they stop Crimo (or any other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/policy-and-politics\/2022\/5\/17\/23104692\/buffalo-shooting-red-flag-gun-new-york\">shooters in states with red flag laws<\/a>)?<\/p>\n<p>All the stereotypical warning signs designed to trigger some sort of intervention were there. Crimo had a troubled history of posting violent content online that \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/video\/highland-park-mayor-speaks-out-after-july-fourth-parade-shooting-143417925526\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reflected a plan and a desire to commit carnage for a long time in advance<\/a>.\u201d He had mental health issues that culminated in an attempted suicide in April 2019. He also had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/07\/05\/us\/robert-e-crimo-highland-park-suspect\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">multiple run-ins<\/a> with local law enforcement, who, at one point, communicated their concerns about him to state police. Yet he still freely carried out a horrific act.<\/p>\n<p>Rinehart\u2019s anti-gun tirade doesn\u2019t make sense unless you come to terms with the fact that his plea for national gun-grabbing is a solely political talking point, not one that is designed to effect change that would actually stop bloodthirsty villain wannabes in their tracks. <\/p>\n<p>Even if \u201cassault weapons\u201d were magically wiped off the face of the earth, as Rinehart seemed to suggest, who is to say that a clearly disturbed individual such as Crimo wouldn\u2019t have come at the July 4 crowd with a knife, dagger, sword or even a vehicle, like the Christmas parade massacre in Waukesha, Wisconsin? <\/p>\n<p>After all, Crimo was in possession of 16 knives, a dagger, and a sword in September 2019 when he <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/07\/06\/robert-crimo-iiis-parents-offer-thoughts-and-prayers\/?utm_source=sailthru&#038;utm_medium=email&#038;utm_campaign=news_alert&#038;utm_content=20220706&#038;lctg=6079a245d4aef525afcaf9ac&#038;utm_term=NYP%20-%20News%20Alerts\">threatened to \u201ckill everyone\u201d<\/a> in his home. Law enforcement confiscated those weapons before returning the knives to the then-teenager\u2019s father who \u201cclaimed the knives were his and they were being stored in the individual\u2019s closet for safekeeping.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Crimo\u2019s father went on to sponsor his son\u2019s December 2019 application for a\u00a0firearm owner identification card, which is required for gun possession by the state of Illinois, and the state police (yes, the same department that knew Crimo was deemed a \u201cclear and present danger\u201d) approved it. <\/p>\n<p>But even if Crimo\u2019s dad hadn\u2019t sponsored the application or the state police had rejected it, there was nothing stopping him from purchasing more blades or seeking out guns from the gangs who sustain the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/2020\/07\/the-chicago-gun-myth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">massive weapons black market<\/a> in the crime-ridden Chicago just 20 miles south of his residence in Highland Park. <\/p>\n<p>The warning signs about Crimo were there but the truth of the matter is that no amount of \u201cawareness\u201d about red flag laws or bans on \u201cassault weapons\u201d will stop criminals with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-62054883\">detailed plans to hurt, kill, and destroy<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Recall that <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/06\/22\/the-14-republicans-who-voted-to-advance-democrats-gun-control-wish-list-just-betrayed-their-base\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">14 Republicans in the Senate<\/a> and 14 Republicans in the House recently voted to push gun restrictions like those found in Illinois in other states. They claimed that these laws would make <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2022\/06\/23\/senate-john-cornyn-bipartisan-gun-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">communities safer<\/a> and prevent future tragedies like previous shootings Buffalo, New York, and Uvalde, Texas. But they were clearly wrong.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s nothing praiseworthy about red flag laws or gun control when one of the strictest firearm regulatory states repeatedly failed to stop Crimo from carrying out a tragic and fatal attack. Begging for the federal government to remove Americans\u2019 option to protect themselves against freaks doesn\u2019t stop shootings, it disarms law-abiding Americans and leaves too much room for bureaucratic error.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<p>\n  Jordan Boyd is a staff writer at The Federalist and co-producer of The Federalist Radio Hour.
