Raphael Warnock (D., Ga.) \/ Getty Images\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\t\t\t<span class=\"text-gray text-xs md:text-lg\"><a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/author\/robert-schmad\/\" title=\"Posts by Robert Schmad\" class=\"author url fn text-red-700\" rel=\"author\">Robert Schmad<\/a> \u2022 July 6, 2022 12:20 pm<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Democratic Georgia senator Raphael Warnock might have violated federal law by paying campaign lawyers to represent him in a personal lawsuit,\u00a0<em>Politico<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/07\/06\/warnock-used-campaign-funds-to-fight-personal-lawsuit-00044148\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Warnock last year paid his campaign&#8217;s lawyers, the Elias Law Group, to represent him in a personal lawsuit involving actions before he became a senator. That decision might have breached federal election law, experts say.<\/p>\n<p>This is far from the first time Warnock,\u00a0who this year will square off against Republican challenger Herschel Walker in a closely watched campaign, has faced legal trouble.\u00a0Warnock&#8217;s ex-wife says the Georgia senator <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/democrats\/ex-wife-accuses-warnock-of-harassment-after-college-records-subpoena\/\">harassed her<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/democrats\/ex-wife-accuses-warnock-of-neglecting-children-failing-to-pay-childcare-expenses\/\">neglected their children<\/a>. As the senior pastor of a Maryland church in 2002, Warnock <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/elections\/police-reports-shed-more-light-on-warnocks-2002-arrest-for-obstruction-extremely-uncooperative-and-disruptive\/\">repeatedly disrupted<\/a> an investigation into child abuse at a church-sponsored summer camp, leading to his arrest.<\/p>\n<p>Democratic superlawyer Marc Elias, whose law firm represents Warnock&#8217;s campaign and received the campaign funds, called the payment &#8220;completely legal,&#8221; saying the FEC has ruled that spending campaign money on personal expenses is permissible.<\/p>\n<p>None of the FEC rulings that Elias cited, however, says anything about lawsuits in which the events occurred before the officeholder held office, <em>Politico<\/em> found.<\/p>\n<p>Political law attorney Charlie Spies, a Republican, disagrees with Elias.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If Warnock is using campaign money to pay for a lawsuit that predates his running for office,&#8221; Spies told <em>Politico<\/em>, &#8220;then by definition it existed irrespective of his candidacy and would be impermissible to use campaign funds on.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t think his donors are giving for him to fund personal lawsuits,&#8221; Spies said.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Democrats Senator Raphael Warnock might have broken campaign finance rules  Sen.
