He just can\u2019t recognize faces.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ninds.nih.gov\/health-information\/disorders\/prosopagnosia\">says<\/a> about the condition: \u201cProsopagnosia is a neurological disorder characterized by the inability to recognize faces.\u00a0 Prosopagnosia is also known as face blindness or facial agnosia.\u00a0 The term prosopagnosia comes from the Greek words for \u2018face\u2019 and \u2018lack of knowledge.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But there are different levels of the condition. \u201cDepending upon the degree of impairment, some people with prosopagnosia may only have difficulty recognizing a familiar face; others will be unable to discriminate between unknown faces, while still others may not even be able to distinguish a face as being different from an object.\u00a0 Some people with the disorder are unable to recognize their own face.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still, Pitt hasn\u2019t been diagnosed with the disorder. He just thinks he has it.<\/p>\n<p>In a recent interview with <a class href=\"https:\/\/www.gq-magazine.co.uk\/culture\/article\/brad-pitt-interview-2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">GQ<\/a> magazine, Pitt said he has long believed he has the condition and worries that people think he\u2019s remote or aloof because he doesn\u2019t recognize them. \u201cNobody believes me!\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanna meet another [person with the prosopagnosia],\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Pitt has talked about his belief that he has the disorder, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esquire.com\/entertainment\/movies\/interviews\/a22679\/brad-pitt-cover-interview-0613\/\">telling<\/a> Esquire in 2013 that he has tried openly asking for context to help him remember people but said that only \u201cpiss[ed] more people off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou get this thing, like, \u2018You\u2019re being egotistical. You\u2019re being conceited,&#8217;\u201d Pitt said. But he added he doesn\u2019t know why he doesn\u2019t recognize people. \u201cI can\u2019t grasp a face, and yet I come from such a design\/aesthetic point of view. I am going to get it tested. \u2026 That\u2019s why I stay at home,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s more from NINDS: \u201cProsopagnosia is not related to memory dysfunction, memory loss, impaired vision, or learning disabilities.\u00a0 Prosopagnosia is thought to be the result of abnormalities, damage, or impairment in the right fusiform gyrus, a fold in the brain that appears to coordinate the neural systems that control facial perception and memory.\u00a0 Prosopagnosia can result from stroke, traumatic brain injury, or certain neurodegenerative diseases.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn some cases it is a congenital disorder, present at birth in the absence of any brain damage.\u00a0 Congenital prosopagnosia appears to run in families, which makes it likely to be the result of a genetic mutation or deletion.\u00a0 Some degree of prosopagnosia is often present in children with autism and Asperger\u2019s syndrome, and may be the cause of their impaired social development,\u201d the Institute said.<\/p>\n<p><em>Joseph Curl has covered politics for 35 years, including 12 years as White House correspondent for a national newspaper.
