U.S. officials say Griner has been detained wrongfully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs I sit here in a Russian prison, alone with my thoughts and without the protection of my wife, family, friends, Olympic jersey, or any accomplishments, I\u2019m terrified I might be here forever,\u201d she wrote in a letter, excerpts of which have been shared by her representatives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn the 4th of July, our family normally honors the service of those who fought for our freedom, including my father who is a Vietnam War Veteran.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt hurts thinking about how I usually celebrate this day because freedom means something completely different to me this year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Griner, who competes in the U.S. Women\u2019s National Basketball Association (WNBA) but has also played regularly in Russia, was formally told at the first hearing that she was charged with intentionally importing narcotics into Russia.<\/p>\n<p>The judge set the next hearing for July 7.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI realize you are dealing with so much, but please don\u2019t forget about me and the other American Detainees.
