Wade<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In a viral LinkedIn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/postlopez_pride-pridemonth-lgbtq-activity-6947259142164164608-EVZ6\/?utm_source=linkedin_share&#038;utm_medium=member_desktop_web&#038;src=aff-lilpar&#038;veh=aff_src.aff-lilpar_c.partners_pkw.10078_plc.Skimbit%20Ltd._pcrid.nypost.com_learning&#038;trk=aff_src.aff-lilpar_c.partners_pkw.10078_plc.Skimbit%20Ltd._pcrid.nypost.com_learning&#038;clickid=RDQTFjTxlxyITBtTHLRcezukUkDwtTXxwzvsS80&#038;mcid=6851962469594763264&#038;irgwc=1\">post<\/a>, Michael Lopez \u2014 who introduced himself as a \u201cqueer brown person\u201d \u2014 said that he was \u201cfired during Pride month for speaking up in defense of abortion rights.\u201d Lopez explained that he was responsible every Friday for processing a report and sending his work to 275 people \u2014 a duty he neglected on the Friday that the Supreme Court announced its decision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t do them today,\u201d he said in an email that appeared to be in response to a superior. \u201cI\u2019m in mourning due to the attack on people with uteruses in the US. Federally guaranteed access to abortion is gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He then said that his employer \u201cmust stop donating to anti-abortion, anti-queer and anti-trans politicians\u201d such as Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Rep. Ken Buck (R-CO), and Rep. Victoria Spartz (R-IN), or else \u201cexpect more unproductive days.\u201d He concluded the email with the salutation \u201cyours in fury.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lopez commented in his post that \u201cit\u2019s been hard to process how [companies] expect us to be productive while our rights are being stripped away\u201d and noted that several coworkers sent him supportive emails. His manager even gave him the rest of the day off. Yet he predicted that \u201cbased on management\u2019s response, there was a good possibility I might be fired as a result.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lopez alleged that he received a \u201csurprise\u201d video chat on June 27 from the human resources department informing him that he had been terminated for not doing his job and \u201cdisrupting the day of 275 people,\u201d according to a paraphrase. He then sent a message to the members of the email list, saying that the company was \u201cletting you know where they stand on employees speaking out on politicians that support marginalization for folks like me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir actions today, their silence on Friday are indicative of their motivations. Profit at all costs. Solidarity, only if it\u2019s profitable,\u201d Lopez concluded in his post. \u201cAnd above all of that is maintaining the status quo and saying fuck you to the working class. Because that\u2019s what happened today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A Universal Music Group spokesperson told <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/07\/04\/employee-who-refused-to-work-while-mourning-roe-v-wade-fired\/?utm_source=NYPTwitter&#038;utm_campaign=SocialFlow&#038;utm_medium=SocialFlow\">The New York Post<\/a> that although it cannot \u201cdiscuss an individual\u2019s personnel record\u201d as a matter of policy, Lopez\u2019s allegations are \u201cinaccurate.\u201d The spokesperson added that the company is ensuring \u201cimportant healthcare services remain accessible to employees\u201d and will continue to \u201cfinancially support non-profit groups working in this area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A report for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/pro\/roe-v-wade-overturned-music-companies-abortion-policies\/\">Billboard<\/a> revealed that other music companies are voicing support for abortion after the Supreme Court\u2019s landmark ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women\u2019s Health Organization, which dealt with a Mississippi ban on the procedure after 15 weeks gestation.<\/p>\n<p>Concert company Live Nation announced via social media that it would cover travel expenses for employees seeking \u201cwomen\u2019s healthcare services\u201d across state lines, as well as bail expenses for employees arrested in peaceful protests.
