He married his high school sweetheart, Teresa Terry, and together they had two kids before divorcing in 1996. In the same year his divorce from Terry was finalized, Todd married Julie.<\/p>\n<p>He made a fortune through Chrisley Asset Management, a real estate company he founded in Georgia. The success of the business combined with Todd\u2019s personality and large family made him a perfect candidate for reality TV.<\/p>\n<p>Even before the Chrisleys began their reality show in 2014, they had financial problems. In 2012, Todd filed for bankruptcy protection. Explaining the filing, his lawyer\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/tv\/chrisley-knows-best-inside-todd-chrisleys-45-million-bankruptcy-case\/#:~:text=After%20a%20large%20business%20investment,have%20been%20fine%2C%20financially.%E2%80%9D\">told\u00a0People<\/a>,:\u201cHe guaranteed a real estate development loan and it failed. He was on the hook for $30 million. If he hadn\u2019t had that happen, he would have been fine, financially.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Justice (DOJ), however, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-ndga\/pr\/reality-tv-stars-convicted-fraud-and-tax-evasion?ftag=YHF4eb9d17\">explained<\/a> that the Chrisleys \u2014 prior to their reality show \u2014 \u201cconspired to defraud community banks in the Atlanta area to obtain more than $30 million in personal loans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With the help of a business partner, <a href=\"https:\/\/popculture.com\/reality-tv\/news\/todd-chrisley-ex-business-partner-mark-braddock-claims-had-affair\/\">Mark Braddock<\/a>, the Chrisleys \u201csubmitted false bank statements, audit reports, and personal financial statements to banks to obtain the millions of dollars in fraudulent loans,\u201d the DOJ wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The Chrisleys used the money from the fraudulent loans to live a life of luxury, buying expensive homes, cars and clothes, according to the DOJ. Once the money was spent, Todd filed for bankruptcy in order to avoid repaying the money; he listed $4.2 million in assets and $49.4 million in debt, according to People.<\/p>\n<p>A court-appointed trustee, Jason Pettie, became suspicious of the bankruptcy filing, believing the Chrisleys were potentially hiding wealth. In February 2014, Pettie filed a complaint alleging that Todd transferred wealth to Julie to hide assets.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/tv\/chrisley-knows-best-inside-todd-chrisleys-45-million-bankruptcy-case\/\">According to People<\/a>, Pettie wrote: \u201cNeither [Chrisley nor his wife, Julie] has been employed since 2012. However, they continue to live in lavish residences, drive expensive vehicles and travel extensively.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Todd\u2019s attorney, Robert Furr, insisted at the time that his client was cooperating and \u201cnot hiding assets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of the issues Pettie brought up was how much the Chrisleys allegedly spent on clothes. In a promo for \u201cChrisley Knows Best,\u201d Todd claimed that his family sometimes spends \u201c$300,000 or more\u201d a year on clothing, reported People. When filing for bankruptcy, however, Todd claimed his clothes were worth about $650. Pettie looked at receipts from several high-end stores and discovered Todd spent thousands on clothes, much more than he claimed.<\/p>\n<p>Furr responded at the time by saying the Chrisleys buy used clothes.<\/p>\n<p>Todd and Julie remained under suspicion for years, until 2017 when their problems expanded. WSB-TV <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsbtv.com\/news\/local\/north-fulton-county\/state-issues-liens-against-reality-star-after-channel-2-investigation\/505362349\/\">reported<\/a> at the time that the Chrisleys owed nearly $800,000 in taxes to the state of Georgia and had declared their residency on numerous public records before moving to Nashville, Tennessee, in 2016. One of Todd\u2019s sons, Kyle, even told the outlet that his dad bragged about the situation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think he\u2019s trying to hide money,\u201d Kyle Chrisley said. \u201cHe doesn\u2019t like to pay what he owes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2018, Todd sued Homebanc Mortgage Corporation, Radar Online\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/radaronline.com\/exclusives\/2019\/08\/todd-chrisley-blamed-business-partner-morgage-forgery-before-indictment-scandal\/\">reported<\/a>, alleging a \u201cformer business partner,\u201d presumably Mark Braddock, forged Todd\u2019s name on the mortgage and made some payments on his behalf.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlaintiff did not sign the Mortgage or the accompanying documents and the same contains a forgery of Plaintiff\u2019s name,\u201d Todd alleged in court documents, according to the outlet. \u201cPlaintiff believes that a former business partner signed his name on the Mortgage and made various payments on the Mortgage on his behalf.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Todd also claimed that the same business partner was the reason he had to file for bankruptcy protection in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>In 2019, the Chrisleys were indicted \u201con charges of conspiracy to commit bank fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, conspiracy to defraud the United States, and tax evasion,\u201d Insider\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.insider.com\/who-are-the-chrisleys-reality-tv-family-tax-fraud-case-2022-5\">reported<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Following the indictment, Todd posted a statement on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B1FBsnfn_4q\/?utm_source=ig_embed&#038;ig_rid=e8b69632-0b5c-4d0e-98ae-70de4e3e737c\">Instagram<\/a> and blamed \u201ca trusted employee\u201d for the family\u2019s problems.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt all started back in 2012, when we discovered that a trusted employee of ours had been stealing from us big time. I won\u2019t go into details, but it involved all kinds of really bad stuff like creating phony documents, forging our signatures, and threatening other employees with violence if they said anything.
