The vehicle slowed to a stop at E. Officers attempted to safely apprehend the suspect by deploying tasers, but the deployment was unsuccessful, and Walker fled on foot into a nearby parking lot, bodycam footage reveals.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>While in the parking lot, the suspect came to a stop and turned his body toward officers. Walker died on scene. Eight officers were directly involved in the shooting, and all have been placed on administrative leave.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>During Sunday&#8217;s press conference, Chief Mylett said that Walker was unarmed at the time of the shooting but fired at officers from his vehicle just minutes before his death.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>Video evidence shows the suspect&#8217;s vehicle containing a handgun, a loaded magazine, and a gold wedding ring.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<figure class=\"kg-card kg-image-card\"><\/figure>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<figure class=\"kg-card kg-embed-card\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/jaylandwalker?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#jaylandwalker<\/a> did everything necessary to get shot by police <\/p>\n<p>1. Lead police on a high speed pursuit through a residential area as well<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Drew Hernandez (@DrewHLive) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DrewHLive\/status\/1543665716942934016?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 3, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>When asked if officers overreacted to the perceived threat, Chief Mylett said, &#8220;I&#8217;m not going to pass judgment&#8221; until the investigation is completed.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>&#8220;It was difficult to watch, and shocking,&#8221; Mylett added.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>Protests erupted throughout the Akron community following the fatal shooting and Mayor Daniel Horrigan pleaded to demonstrators to keep things peaceful.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>&#8220;The video is heartbreaking, it&#8217;s hard to take in,&#8221; Horrigan said.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>The city cancelled its Fourth of July celebrations as planned protests are set to take place, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2022\/07\/03\/jayland-walker-akron-police-officer-shooting-video-release\/7796683001\/\">USA Today<\/a><\/em> reports.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>&#8220;I completely understand that some residents and guests will be disappointed by the decision to cancel the festival this holiday weekend,&#8221; Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan said in a statement. &#8220;Unfortunately, I feel strongly that this is not the time for a city-led celebration.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>The Justice Department released a statement and said that the US Attorney&#8217;s Office, the Justice Department\u2019s Civil Rights Division, and the FBI field office in Akron are &#8220;closely monitoring and reviewing the circumstances&#8221; surrounding Walker&#8217;s death.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>&#8220;The FBI continues to coordinate with state and local partners to provide resources and specialized skills,&#8221; the statement added, according to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2022\/07\/03\/jayland-walker-akron-police-officer-shooting-video-release\/7796683001\/\">USA Today<\/a>.<\/em> &#8220;If the evidence reveals potential violations of federal criminal statutes, the Justice Department will take appropriate action.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost issued a statement on Sunday and said, &#8220;People want and deserve answers, and they shall have them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p> &#8220;BCI will conduct a complete, fair, and expert investigation.
