The president used his remarks to rally NATO and European nations behind his promise to back Ukraine whatever the cost.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPutin thought he could break the transatlantic alliance,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/conservativebrief-com.webpkgcache.com\/doc\/-\/s\/conservativebrief.com\/madrid-64121\/\">Biden theorized<\/a> during his comments to reporters.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe tried to weaken us. He expected our resolve to fracture. But he\u2019s getting exactly what he did not want. He wanted the Finland-ization of NATO. He got the NATO-ization of Finland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>British Prime Minister Made Similar Promise<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>British Prime Minister Boris Johnson urged world leaders to stick to their guns and maintain long-term support for Ukraine during a recent G7 summit in southern Germany.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson said that the consequences of a Russian victory in Ukraine would be \u201cabsolutely catastrophic\u201d and that he believes assisting Ukraine in this effort is necessary.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would just say to people in the United States that this is something that America historically does and has to do,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/jun\/26\/boris-johnson-urges-world-leaders-to-hold-firm-on-ukraine\">the British PM said.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>Johnson used several interviews and television appearances to stress the importance of maintaining long-term support in Ukraine \u2013 and with British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss indicating that the war could last <a href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/news\/politics\/1602456\/ukraine-news-liz-truss-fears-putin-s-war-will-span-10-years\">as long as 10 years<\/a>, that\u2019s no small thing.\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>NATO Isn\u2019t Actually Unified<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>NATO is not entirely unified on the matter, however.\n<\/p>\n<p>Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has worked to facilitate negotiations between Russia and Ukraine since the early days of the invasion and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/en\/politics\/speaking-to-putin-turkish-president-erdogan-urges-istanbul-meeting-of-ukrainian-russian-leaders\/2573309\">personally discussed the matter<\/a> with the Russian president on several occasions since the outbreak of the war.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/turkey-can-help-russia-ukraine-observation-mechanism-erdogan-tells-putin-2022-05-30\/\">In May<\/a>, Erdogan told Putin that Ankara was ready to assume a role in an \u201cobservation mechanism\u201d between the United Nations, Kyiv, and Moscow if an agreement can be reached between the two countries.\n<\/p>\n<p>Erdogan has repeatedly pushed for peace between the two nations and worked to find a diplomatic solution to the war. Journalist Michael Tracey revealed on Thursday how the Turkish president believes his approach to solving the crisis is superior because \u201cthe proof is in the pudding.\u201d The exchange took place during a question-and-answer session with journalists in Madrid.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBelieve it or not, Erdogan just called on me and answered my question. I noted he\u2019s one of the few or only NATO leaders calling for diplomacy in Ukraine, whereas US\/UK are calling for military escalation. He said his approach is superior because \u2018the proof is in the pudding,\u2019\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mtracey\/status\/1542511342170427393\">Tracey wrote on Twitter.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>Erdogan\u2019s views on the war may diverge from the consensus among NATO, but his voice is by far one of the most influential when it comes to negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin.\n<\/p>\n<p><em>Jack Buckby is a British author, counter-extremism researcher, and journalist based in New York.
