Wade\u00a0<\/em>and return abortion laws to states.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf a physician is practicing medicine in the state of Mississippi, they have to have a license to do so and if abortion is illegal in our state, which it is, then those medicines will not be allowed and they will not have a license to practice in our state,\u201d Reeves said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny physician that is practicing, whether it\u2019s through telemedicine or otherwise\u2026 that practices in our state is practicing not only based upon the standards of care that we require in our state, but also based upon state law,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The governor also argued that his state\u2019s board of medical licensure will take away the license of those who violate the ban against abortion pills.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd so if a physician is attempting to practice medicine in the state of Mississippi and they are violating our law, then our state board of medical licensure will pull the license from them,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n<p>Reeves was also asked about a potential state bill that would allow abortion after a case of rape.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t believe that an exception for rape will make it through the Mississippi legislature and make it to my desk,\u201d he responded.<\/p>\n<p>Mississippi is not the only state making new laws regarding abortion pills. Louisiana\u00a0Governor John Bel Edwards (D-LA) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/louisiana-governor-signs-bill-outlawing-the-mailing-of-abortion-pills\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">signed<\/a> a bill into law last month that will make mailing abortion pills a crime in his state.<\/p>\n<p>SB 388 will \u201cprohibit criminal abortion by means of the use of an abortion inducing drug without the prescribing physician being physically present during the administration of the drug,\u201d including a $1,000 fine and a maximum of six months in prison.<\/p>\n<p>The bill, which goes into effect on August 1, does not allow a pregnant woman to be punished under the new policy. Other contraceptive methods, such as Plan B, are also not banned by the law.<\/p>\n<p>South Dakota Republican Governor Kristi Noem signed a bill to ban telemedicine abortion in March.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sdlegislature.gov\/Session\/Bill\/23247\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HB 1318<\/a>\u00a0will \u201cprohibit medical abortion by telemedicine and \u2026 increase the penalty for the unlicensed practice of medicine when performing a medical abortion.\u201d The legislation will require mifepristone and misoprostol to be dispensed from licensed physicians and prohibit obtaining the drugs online or by mail for the purposes of a chemical abortion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith this bill, we will protect both unborn babies and their mothers from this dangerous procedure,\u201d Noem wrote ahead of signing it into law.<\/p>\n<p>The Guttmacher Institute\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/article\/2022\/02\/medication-abortion-now-accounts-more-half-all-us-abortions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>\u00a0that medication abortion accounted for 54% of US abortions by 2020.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mississippi Republican Governor Tate Reeves said on Sunday that doctors in his state will lose their medical license for prescribing abortion pills.
