The bodies are now in the possession of the Clark County Coroner\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe arrived at the scene, of course our officers did smell a strong odor that was consistent with a decomposing body,\u201d Jeffersonville Police Maj. Isaac Parker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksdk.com\/article\/news\/local\/jeffersonville-police-secured-funeral-home-lankford-funeral-home-family-center-indiana\/417-8c65ef97-986a-4d2d-9cda-b38272fb7a13\">told WHAS News<\/a>. \u201cIf you walked inside the business itself, you\u2019d understand this is abnormal for any funeral home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Jeffersonville Police along with the fire department are investigating conditions at the Lankford Funeral Home and Family Center. No details as of now but will update here \ud83d\udc47\ud83c\udffc <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WHAS11?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@WHAS11<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/AEu7nUdF3u\">pic.twitter.com\/AEu7nUdF3u<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ford Sanders WHAS 11 (@fordsandersTV) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/fordsandersTV\/status\/1543031428950245376?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 2, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Inside the southern Indiana funeral parlor, police located 31 bodies, \u201csome of which were in the advanced stages of decomposition,\u201d along with the post-cremation remains of 16 other people. The bodies were said to be in varying stages of decomposition.<\/p>\n<p>Over the weekend, various state and local agencies launched investigations into conditions at the funeral home, even as families were devastated to learn how their loved ones\u2019 bodies had been treated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI couldn\u2019t sleep last night not known what happened to his body,\u201d Tara Owens said of her brother, Mike, whose body had been set for cremation back in April. \u201cHas he been cremated? Is he not? What\u2019s going on? If I do get cremated remains, how do I know that they\u2019re him? It\u2019s just really sad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Parker said the funeral home\u2019s owner has been cooperative with police, but he declined to elaborate. No charges have been filed so far. Late Friday night, a refrigerated truck was seen parked outside the funeral home, and workers were loading corpses onto it.<\/p>\n<p>Some bodies had been stored at the funeral home since March, Parker said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe understand that this is going to be a situation where we\u2019re really going to need the assistance of these families,\u201d Parker added. \u201cI\u2019m sorry that they\u2019ve already suffered a loss and now they\u2019re dealing with this situation.
