(Jon Fahey\/AP Photo)<\/figure>\n<h2>\u2018America-First Offshore Energy Strategy\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>This stands in contrast to a Trump-era <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/documents\/2018\/01\/08\/2018-00083\/notice-of-availability-of-the-2019-2024-draft-proposed-outer-continental-shelf-oil-and-gas-leasing\">proposal for<\/a> 47 new offshore drilling leases, including in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.<\/p>\n<p>Former President Donald Trump, who sought to expand U.S. fossil fuel production as a bulwark against supply disruptions and to bolster America\u2019s energy security, issued an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/documents\/2018\/01\/08\/2018-00083\/notice-of-availability-of-the-2019-2024-draft-proposed-outer-continental-shelf-oil-and-gas-leasing\">executive order<\/a>\u00a0in 2017 titled \u201cImplementing an America-First Offshore Energy Strategy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In it, Trump wrote that, \u201cincreased domestic energy production on Federal lands and waters strengthens the Nation\u2019s security and reduces reliance on imported energy,\u201d adding that, \u201clow energy prices, driven by an increased American energy supply, will benefit American families and help reinvigorate American manufacturing and job growth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Biden administration, by contrast, has sought to crack down on fossil fuels as part of its fight against climate change, with President Joe Biden taking steps like blocking the Keystone XL pipeline project and issuing an executive order that froze new oil and gas leases on federal lands and waters.<\/p>\n<p>Oil prices have soared to multi-year highs since Biden took office, while the price of gasoline has soared to record highs, driving the Biden administration to take steps like pressuring OPEC to boost production, release oil reserves from the strategic stockpile, call on refiners to raise output, and demand that companies expand production under existing leases.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4555342\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cndimages.nyc3.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/GettyImages-1241482317-Large-1200x800-1.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy size-large wp-image-4555342\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/themes\/eet\/images\/white.png\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cndimages.nyc3.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/GettyImages-1241482317-Large-1200x800-1.jpeg\" alt=\"Epoch Times Photo\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4555342\" src=\"https:\/\/cndimages.nyc3.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/GettyImages-1241482317-Large-1200x800-1.jpeg\" alt=\"Epoch Times Photo\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/noscript><\/figcaption><\/a> President Joe Biden in the Roosevelt Room of the White House in Washington on June 23, 2022. (Drew Angerer\/Getty Images)<\/figure>\n<h2>\u2018Reckless\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>The Interior Department\u2019s announcement that it is considering up to 11 new leases was met with criticism from a number of environmental groups, who saw it as a reversal of a pledge to phase out fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOffshore drilling is responsible for a quarter of the greenhouse gases the United States pushes into the atmosphere,\u201d Friends of the Earth, an environmental group, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/foe_us\/status\/1543014086794960896\">said in a tweet<\/a>. \u201c@POTUS, your 5 Year Plan should protect climate and communities and prevent new oil and gas leases!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident Biden campaigned on climate leadership, but he seems poised to let us down at the worst possible moment,\u201d Brady Bradshaw, senior oceans campaigner at the Center for Biological Diversity, said in a statement. \u201cThe reckless approval of yet more offshore drilling would mean more oil spills, more dead wildlife and more polluted communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Others denounced the removal from consideration of new leases in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and the possibility of zero new leases in the Gulf of Mexico and off the coast of Alaska.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently yes to wind turbines on the path of hurricanes and no to offshore drilling for critical energy supplies during an energy crisis,\u201d said Josh Young, Chief Investment Officer at Bison Interests,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Josh_Young_1\/status\/1543204104025128962\">said in a tweet<\/a>.
