Modern medical advances mean we don\u2019t have to choose between the mother and her baby, even in dangerous pregnancies. <\/p>\n<p>Almost always,\u00a0the mother can receive the care she\u00a0needs\u00a0and the baby can be given a chance to survive. Always, both mother and baby can be treated with dignity and respect.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In more than a quarter-century of practice,\u00a0I\u2019ve never encountered a law that prevents me from taking medical action to save a mother\u2019s life.\u00a0What\u2019s more, I practice in Texas, home of the controversial Texas Heartbeat Act.\u00a0Those of us who have <a href=\"https:\/\/capitol.texas.gov\/tlodocs\/87R\/billtext\/pdf\/SB00008F.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">read the law<\/a>\u00a0know it\u2019s\u00a0nonsense to suggest the Heartbeat Act\u00a0prevents\u00a0doctors\u00a0from saving a woman\u2019s life, as abortion advocates claim.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, pregnancy complications that threaten a woman\u2019s life\u00a0are rare. When they do occur,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/fact-sheet-medical-indications-for-separating-a-mother-and-her-unborn-child\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">medical interventions<\/a>\u00a0can most likely save the life\u00a0of the mother\u00a0while giving\u00a0her child\u00a0a chance to survive. Because medical care in America is so advanced, even high-risk pregnancies usually result in the safe delivery of a healthy baby alongside a healthy mother.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Abortion \u2018Is Not Medical Care\u2019\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s important to understand the difference between abortion and medical care in instances where the mother\u2019s\u00a0life might be at risk.\u00a0Intentionally ending the life of a baby is not medical care.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The use of abortion in the case of a life-threatening pregnancy complication\u00a0typically involves a dilation and evacuation\u00a0(D&#038;E) procedure, more commonly referred to as a \u201cdismemberment\u201d abortion.\u00a0In contrast, true medical care\u00a0seeks to\u00a0<em>save<\/em>\u00a0both the unborn baby and the mother.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, it\u2019s necessary to deliver a baby preterm, and sadly the baby doesn\u2019t always survive. But my goal is always to save both the young unborn child and the\u00a0mother. If the baby is not able to survive, the compassionate and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/fact-sheet-medical-indications-for-separating-a-mother-and-her-unborn-child\/#_edn10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">best thing<\/a>\u00a0to do is to deliver the baby in a medically standard way (such as induction or C-section), so the mother is able to hold her child and grieve her loss. That\u2019s the compassion and dignity that the\u00a0medically unnecessary\u00a0act of abortion robs a mother.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Abortion advocates and their\u00a0media allies, however, want you to believe that pro-lifers are so extreme that they\u2019ll willingly sacrifice the\u00a0lives of women, even those with life-threatening\u00a0conditions\u00a0such as\u00a0non-viable\u00a0ectopic pregnancies.\u00a0That\u2019s false.<\/p>\n<p>An ectopic pregnancy happens when an embryo implants outside of the uterus, usually in the fallopian tube, and the fetus has no chance of survival to a live birth. This occurs in 1-2 percent of pregnancies in the United States, but accounts for 4-10 percent of pregnancy-related deaths. <\/p>\n<p>The American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/fact-sheet-medical-indications-for-separating-a-mother-and-her-unborn-child\/#_edn16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">affirms<\/a>: \u201cEctopic pregnancy is a dangerous condition that requires that the pregnancy end.\u201d As soon as it\u2019s diagnosed, physicians will treat an ectopic pregnancy because the mother\u2019s life is at risk, a routine\u00a0obstetric procedure that\u00a0is\u00a0not\u00a0jeopardized by\u00a0<em>Dobbs.<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This\u00a0is lifesaving medical care.\u00a0It is not an elective abortion.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The abortion lobby wants\u00a0to portray the pro-life movement as\u00a0something out of the Dark Ages \u2014\u00a0barbaric and thoroughly anti-American.\u00a0Yet incredibly\u00a0The New York Times, reflecting on a\u00a0single\u00a0tragic case in Poland,\u00a0mourns\u00a0the fact that\u00a0Poland\u00a0is no longer\u00a0under draconian\u00a0Communist rule.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPoland was once a destination for women seeking\u00a0abortion,\u201d the\u00a0newspaper\u00a0notes.\u00a0\u201cUnder Communism, the Catholic Church was\u00a0marginalized\u00a0and abortion legalized in 1956.\u00a0Women were encouraged to work and granted sweeping reproductive rights.\u201d\u00a0The Times\u00a0laments:\u00a0\u201cBut that changed after the Communist government collapsed in 1989.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018Twisted\u2019 View of Health Care\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Presenting abortion as the \u201clife-saving solution\u201d for women facing challenging pregnancies is a warped view of health care. It belongs in a culture that does not value human life. And it denies the\u00a0modern\u00a0medical science that\u00a0can bring both mother and baby safely through even a traumatic pregnancy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Contrary to\u00a0the media\u2019s\u00a0thinly veiled scare tactics, the lives of American women\u00a0are not threatened by\u00a0the Supreme Court\u2019s\u00a0<em>Dobbs\u00a0<\/em>decision.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s worth noting that the vast majority of ob-gyns do not perform abortions because abortion\u00a0isn\u2019t medical care.\u00a0In rare cases of dangerous pregnancies, there will always be\u00a0medical\u00a0contingencies for the health and safety of both mother and unborn child.\u00a0If a mother faces medical risks from a pregnancy, her health can, should, and\u00a0<em>must<\/em>\u00a0be addressed\u00a0as paramount.\u00a0And it will be.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t let the\u00a0abortion\u00a0industry\u00a0or its mouthpieces in the media scare you into believing otherwise.\u00a0<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<p>\n  Dr. Ingrid Skop, M.D., F.O.C.A.G., is senior fellow and director of medical affairs at Charlotte Lozier Institute (www.lozierinstitute.org).
