The boy weighed just 17 pounds when he died, and had only been fed his parents\u2019 strict vegan diet. The boy\u2019s family claimed that he was given breast milk as well.\u00a0Prosecutors said the boy suffered horribly in his dying days.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe chose to disregard his cries,\u201d Assistant State Attorney Sara Miller said during closing arguments. \u201cShe didn\u2019t need a scale to see his bones. His cause of death was determined to be complications from malnutrition.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan O\u2019Leary is slated to stand trial later this year on the same charges.<\/p>\n<p>During her trial, prosecutors said O\u2019Leary failed to seek proper medical care for the ailing boy. The couple had also allegedly neglected their three other children when Ezra died. Two, who were the couple\u2019s other biological children, were placed in the custody of Child Services after their brother\u2019s death, while their 11-year-old half-sister now lives with her father, Khang Chen, in Virginia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Chen testified at trial that he,\u00a0O\u2019Leary and their daughter had lived together at his mother\u2019s home in Virginia\u00a0before the O\u2019Learys\u00a0moved to Florida. He said\u00a0they had taken parenting classes following a court order from Virginia\u2019s Child Protective Services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a class to educate new parents \u2026 or parents in general,\u201d Chen told jurors. \u201cHow to raise a healthy child.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">O\u2019Leary was convicted of first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse, aggravated manslaughter, child abuse, and two counts of child neglect. She will be sentenced July 25.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Shawn Baker, a surgeon and the author of \u201cThe Carnivore Diet\u201d and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sQVb7raC61A\">YouTube advocate of eating meat<\/a>, lamented the boy\u2019s death on his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sRihwW8AExA\">YouTube channel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is by no means unique to the vegan community, but this is certainly an exacerbating fact when we see people who are poor parents and vegan [their children see] much more likelihood of worse outcomes because of the inherent deficiencies in the diet,\u201d Baker said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Florida mom whose toddler son died of malnutrition on a diet of raw fruits and vegetables has been convicted of murder.
