In a particularly gruesome detail, some of those found in the truck appeared to have roasted to death dusted with steak seasoning, a possible attempt to disguise the smell of people as the smugglers crossed the border.<\/p>\n<p>At least 5 of the dead were children.<\/p>\n<p>President Biden called the incident \u201chorrifying and heartbreaking\u201d and said his\u00a0administration \u201cwill continue to do everything possible to stop criminal smugglers from exploiting migrants.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, Biden\u2019s policies at the border may provide a fertile environment for this kind of horrific tragedy to strike again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t just due to a passive stance on human smuggling and trafficking, but policy decisions they started making right out the gate,\u201d said RJ Hauman, director of government relations and communications at the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR).<\/p>\n<p>Biden scrapped the Trump administration\u2019s \u201cRemain in Mexico\u201d policy, which required asylum seekers to return to Mexico to await their court dates. The Biden administration has also attempted to end Title 42, the health policy that has allowed border officials to rapidly expel nearly two million illegal immigrants over COVID-19 concerns. That attempt was blocked in federal court.<\/p>\n<p>As he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/08\/05\/899266045\/biden-would-end-border-wall-construction-but-wont-tear-down-trump-s-additions\">promised<\/a> during his campaign, Biden also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2021\/04\/30\/biden-terminates-border-wall-construction-485123\">halted<\/a> construction on Trump\u2019s border wall and scaled back deportations. The administration rarely deports any illegal immigrants from the interior of the country.<\/p>\n<p>Experts say these policies encourage migrants to try their luck entering illegally and offer smugglers with dangerous practices an opportunity to take advantage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe say don\u2019t come because we will not let you in, but our policies encourage the opposite,\u201d Hauman told The Daily Wire. \u201cMigrants around the world have taken note of this, and they\u2019re using dangerous cartels, smugglers, and traffickers, to make the journey in. And the end result can be tragic situations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, illegal border crossings are soaring. In May, border authorities encountered more than\u00a0239,000 migrants at the southwest border, well above the less than 181,000 they encountered last May, according to Customs and Border Protection. This month, authorities expect to meet or exceed last June\u2019s two-decade high of more than 189,000 migrant encounters.<\/p>\n<p>Border Patrol has conducted more than 10,500 migrant rescue missions so far this fiscal year, on track to beat last year\u2019s record more than 12,800 rescue missions. Earlier this month, CBP announced a new heat stress effort and said it will provide 500 agents with \u201cheat stress kits\u201d and heat stress training.<\/p>\n<p>The Biden administration\u2019s lenient policies at the southern border appear to have exacerbated a situation that began before Biden took office.\u00a0Decades of a porous U.S.-Mexico border, overwhelmed border authorities, and previous administrations that, according to critics, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/obama-aides-were-warned-of-brewing-border-crisis\/2014\/07\/19\/8b5d2282-0d1b-11e4-b8e5-d0de80767fc2_story.html\">encouraged<\/a> weak border security contributed to the dangerous situation we see today.<\/p>\n<p>A nearly identical incident involving a truck happened in 2017, when 10 migrants <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2017\/07\/24\/us\/san-antonio-trailer-migrants\/index.html\">died<\/a> after being trapped in a tractor-trailer found parked at a Walmart in San Antonio.<\/p>\n<p>Back in 2003, 19 migrants including small children and very elderly people were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/dozens-migrants-found-dead-san-antonio-texas-gov-abbott-says-rcna35627\">found<\/a>\u00a0dead in the back of a semi truck, crammed in with about 100 other people in temperatures above 100 degrees. The driver of the truck had been paid $7,500 to drive the migrants through a Border Patrol checkpoint.<\/p>\n<p>Migrants who cross the border illegally face a gauntlet of other perils besides dangerously high heat.<\/p>\n<p>Just last year in March, an SUV carrying 25 people, most of whom were Mexican,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/wireStory\/hospital-suv-carrying-27-crashes-semitruck-killing-15-76205214\">crashed<\/a> into a semitruck in California, killing 13 people.<\/p>\n<p>Jarring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/world\/la-fg-father-daughter-drowning-mexican-border-20190626-story.html\">photos<\/a> of dead migrant children who drowned while trying to cross the Rio Grande have seared themselves into the American psyche.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is another horrific episode in the long-running disaster brought on by the Biden administration\u2019s refusal to enforce immigration laws,\u201d said\u00a0Jessica Vaughan, director of policy studies at the\u00a0Center for Immigration Studies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstead of arresting and removing illegal border crossers as the law requires, Biden continues to release most of them into the country, free to settle where they want,\u201d Vaughan told The Daily Wire. \u201cThis creates an irresistible enticement to hire a smuggler to cross illegally, or to send their children to cross illegally. The border is not closed, nor secure as he claims; the migrants are not fools, they know that if they can get across, chances are they will be allowed to stay here indefinitely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vaughan noted that this week\u2019s truck disaster was the result of a \u201crelatively sophisticated\u201d smuggling operation and said that\u00a0Biden appears to be\u00a0\u201cindifferent to the suffering\u201d and \u201cmore interested in pleasing the special interests who demand an open border for the sake of cheap labor and political advantage.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This week, dozens of migrants were found dead in a tractor trailer under the scorching Texas sun in what law enforcement called the deadliest human smuggling incident in the nation\u2019s history.
