He had served on the court for almost 28 years.<\/p>\n<p>Like Breyer, Jackson is a liberal jurist, and liberal activist groups and lawmakers heralded her nomination and her confirmation to the court as a massive victory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith a full heart, I accept the solemn responsibility of supporting and defending the Constitution of the United States and administering justice\u00a0without fear or favor,\u00a0so help me God,\u201d Jackson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/politics\/live-news\/ketanji-brown-jackson-supreme-court-swearing-in\/index.html\">said in a statement<\/a> on Thursday. \u201cI am truly grateful to be part of the promise of our great Nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI extend my sincerest thanks to all of my new colleagues for their warm and gracious welcome,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n<p>The new justice described Breyer as a \u201cpersonal friend and mentor\u201d and thanked him for his guidance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the wake of his exemplary\u00a0service,\u201d she concluded, \u201cwith the support of my family and friends, and ever mindful of the duty to promote the\u00a0Rule of Law, I am well-positioned to serve the American people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Like most recent Supreme Court nominees, Jackson\u2019s confirmation hearings were marked by a serious and at times contentious examination of her judicial record.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/hawley-biden-scotus-nominee-has-a-pattern-of-letting-child-porn-offenders-off-the-hook\">had raised concerns<\/a> in March that Jackson\u2019s record demonstrates that she \u201chas a pattern of letting child porn offenders off the hook for their appalling crimes.\u201d The senator\u2019s warning prompted Republicans to call for a full investigation of her past rulings, and Jackson was heavily questioned about her stances during her confirmation hearings.<\/p>\n<p>Jackson\u2019s confirmation to the Court was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/demandjustice.org\/ketanji-brown-jackson\/\">backed by Demand Justice<\/a>, an organization that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/smear-campaign-leftist-activists-seek-to-intimidate-justices-control-the-court-experts-say\">reportedly has ties<\/a>\u00a0to the influential progressive dark money\u00a0group\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2021\/11\/arabella-advisors-money-democrats\/620553\/\">Arabella Advisors<\/a>, which advocates for court-packing and has repeatedly orchestrated campaigns attempting to sway the justices on high-profile cases.<\/p>\n<p>When the draft Supreme Court opinion overturning\u00a0<em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>\u00a0was leaked in May,\u00a0Demand Justice Executive Director Brian Fallon praised the unprecedented leak,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/brianefallon\/status\/1521377663134453760\">saying<\/a>, \u201cSCOTUS leaks are good. Elite lawyers on both the left and right treating the Court as precious all these years have just been giving cover to an institution that is wholly unaccountable. Rip the veil off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This sentiment was <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/brianefallon\/status\/1521296266264817667\">echoed<\/a> in a tweet from the day before, \u201cAll Democrats need to show the same urgency as the clerk who apparently risked his or her career to sound this alarm,\u201d he urged. \u201cThose on the inside know best how broken the institution is. We should listen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Demand Justice\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/demandjustice.org\/demand-justice-launches-breyer-retire-push-on-anniversary-of-stevens-retirement\/\">launched<\/a>\u00a0an April 2021 campaign to pressure Breyer to step down and make way for the first black female Supreme Court justice (Jackson<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/regulation\/court-battles\/547355-progressive-group-ramps-up-pressure-on-justice-breyer-to-retire?rl=1\">\u00a0was already considered<\/a>\u00a0the top candidate at the time).<\/p>\n<p>Fallon, a former top aide to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/regulation\/court-battles\/547448-biden-will-let-breyer-decide-when-to-retire-aide-says\/\">insisted<\/a>\u00a0in April 2021 that it was \u201cworrisome that Justice Breyer has not said yet that he will step down,\u201d according to The Hill.<\/p>\n<p>The group\u2019s campaign for Breyer to retire was accompanied by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2021\/04\/14\/stephen-breyer-retirement-supreme-court-481197\">pressure<\/a>\u00a0from Democratic politicians, including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/legal-issues\/biden-judicial-nominees-supreme-court-breyer\/2021\/04\/23\/eb770fec-a2fc-11eb-85fc-06664ff4489d_story.html\">Sen. Richard Blumenthal<\/a>\u00a0(D-CT) and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/06\/14\/politics\/alexandria-ocasio-cortez-stephen-breyer-scotus\/index.html\">Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez<\/a>\u00a0(D-NY).<\/p>\n<p>And when Breyer\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/highly-unusual-new-development-on-supreme-court-justice-stephen-breyers-retirement-raises-questions\">finally announced<\/a>\u00a0his retirement in January, Demand Justice\u2019s Supreme Court blog\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ballsandstrikes.org\/scotus\/stephen-breyer-retiring-huzzah\/\">published<\/a> a piece that credited Breyer\u2019s retirement to being \u201cshamed by your tweets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has been my great honor to participate as a judge in the effort to maintain our Constitution and the Rule of Law,\u201d\u00a0Breyer\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/publicinfo\/press\/2022-06-29_SGB_Letter.pdf\">said<\/a> in a Wednesday letter addressed to Biden.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis past January, I wrote to inform you of my intent to retire from regular active service as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, upon the Court rising for its summer recess,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have nominated and the United States Senate has confirmed the Honorable Ketanji Brown Jackson to succeed me in the office, and I understand that she is prepared to take the prescribed oaths to begin her service as the 116th member of this Court.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ketanji Brown Jackson on Thursday was sworn in as a United States Supreme Court Justice, the first black woman to ascend to the highest court in the land.
