Far too many schools have wandered from these touchstones. Some educators are so caught up in pedagogical \u2018theory\u2019 that they have forgotten that facts come first. Some activists in our schools, public and private alike, are so antagonistic toward our culture, without recognizing what they owe to it, that they seek to erase our worthy history of liberty from the curriculum.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Much curricula, said David Randall, the executive director of Civics Alliance coordinating the effort, is \u201cconfusing,\u201d \u201cbadly written,\u201d and \u201cterribly political,\u201d with an agenda that\u2019s erased the defining concepts of American exceptionalism from the classroom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe crucial thing is to restore social studies instruction that teaches the story of liberty, the story of our country that is not politicized, [and] that is not unrigorous,\u201d Randall told The Federalist.<\/p>\n<p>Ohio Northern University Law Professor Bruce Frohnen, who served as a consultant on developing the academic program, said the current direction of American education has \u201cgotten to the point where it is life and death for our culture and for our democratic republic.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Educators today have bred \u201ctwo generations of hostility towards America as a racist, sexist, homophobic system that\u2019s irredeemably evil,\u201d Frohnen told The Federalist.<\/p>\n<p>The classroom obsession with K-12 curricula infected with wokeness is getting worse, warranting the standards to replace new status quo. <a href=\"https:\/\/pulitzercenter.org\/blog\/nikole-hannah-jones-wins-pulitzer-prize-1619-project\">According<\/a> to the Pulitzer Center, the New York Times\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2020\/03\/13\/correction-to-the-1619-project-proves-it-is-not-fit-for-schools\/\">fraudulent<\/a> \u201c1619 Project\u201dof revisionist history was embedded in 4,500 classrooms nationwide by the summer of 2020. In October of the same year, the NAS called for the project\u2019s Pulitzer Prize to be <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2020\/10\/09\/national-association-of-scholars-calls-for-revoking-the-1619-project-pulitzer-prize\/\">revoked<\/a> over substantive inaccuracies. <\/p>\n<p>The new standards from the NAS\u2019s Civic Alliance build off a Massachusetts framework developed under the state\u2019s then-Republican Gov. Mitt Romney in 2003. Those were able to garner approval from Democrat policymakers. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s therefore meant to have broad appeal for the United States,\u201d Randall said, who highlighted the adaptability of the new standards to best fit the local needs of institutions that choose to use them. State leaders in Rhode Island, Ohio, Washington, and Kentucky have already shown a particular interest in adopting the K-12 curriculum.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t want identical standards,\u201d Randall told The Federalist, who sold the model as flexible yet rigorous in stark contrast to incumbent programming that\u2019s become watered down in the name of equity. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSoft standards actually make for a more unequal society,\u201d Randall said, adding the new model prioritizes flexibility and high standards as a better alternative. \u201cThis is how you drive out everything that\u2019s no good in education.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p>Robert Maranto, the 21st-century chair in leadership and professor of education policy at the University of Arkansas, is one of 15 advisors who collaborated on the project. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe thing we\u2019ve lost,\u201d Maranto told The Federalist, is how to \u201cprepare people for democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJan. 6 and the 2020 riots indicate people don\u2019t understand our political system\u2026 If we don\u2019t teach young people about that, we\u2019re going to lose it,\u201d Maranto said, noting an uneducated citizenry forfeits civil engagement. \u201cNaturally when people don\u2019t get their way, they will move to violent means.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Just last weekend, pro-abortion terrorists <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/06\/27\/pro-abortion-demonstrators-unleash-weekend-of-arson-vandalism-and-insurrection-after-dobbs\/\">torched <\/a>pregnancy centers, disrupted traffic, and assaulted state capitols after Supreme Court justices overturned the landmark decision in Roe v. Wade. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need a curriculum anchored in American history,\u201d Maranto emphasized, while still maintaining importance on educating the next generation of other civilizations. That\u2019s exactly what the new standards from the National Association of Scholars seeks to accomplish, with lesson plans ranging from the colonial founding to the Greeks and Incas.  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t really understand your own country without understanding other countries,\u201d Maranto added. Slavery, for example, \u201cisn\u2019t uniquely American.
