The disruptions worsened problems already faced by airlines due to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/u-s-airlines-desperate-for-pilots-consider-cutting-training-requirements\">enduring pilot shortages<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDelta people are working around the clock to rebuild Delta\u2019s operation while making it as resilient as possible to minimize the ripple effect of disruptions,\u201d Delta <a href=\"https:\/\/news.delta.com\/delta-gives-customers-option-change-flights-ahead-july-fourth-travel\">said<\/a>. \u201cEven so, some operational challenges are expected this holiday weekend. This unique waiver is being issued to give Delta customers greater flexibility to plan around busy travel times, weather forecasts and other variables without worrying about a potential cost to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Customers will be able to rebook trips made between July 1 and July 4, provided they travel between the same origin and destination. According to the company, waivers are typically granted only due to weather events that cause widespread travel disruptions.<\/p>\n<p>In response to forecasted travel disruptions over the Fourth of July weekend, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg told airline executives earlier this month to proactively minimize cancellations, according to a report from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/travel\/article\/flight-cancellations-buttigieg-faa-airlines-performance\/index.html\">CNN<\/a>. After carriers said that the Federal Aviation Administration was not sufficiently staffed to handle high flight traffic in and out of Florida, the agency announced it is \u201cplacing additional air traffic controllers at facilities in Florida to support our long-term strategy of staffing to increased traffic demand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Delta said it would handle traveler volumes \u201cnot seen since before the pandemic as people yearn to connect with the world\u201d over the Fourth of July weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, air travel fell from 927 million passengers in 2019 before plummeting to 369 million passengers in 2020, as COVID and lockdown measures gripped the airline industry, according to the U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bts.gov\/newsroom\/full-year-2021-and-december-2021-us-airline-traffic-data#:~:text=U.S.%20airlines%20carried%20674%20million,2019%27s%20927%20million%20(unadjusted).\">Bureau of Transportation Statistics<\/a>. In 2021, air travel partially rebounded to 674 million passengers.<\/p>\n<p>Americans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/airport-nightmare-continues-into-2022-u-s-flight-cancellations-hit-new-heights\">endured<\/a> flight cancellations around Christmas and New Year\u2019s Day because of winter weather conditions as well as staffing shortages brought by the Omicron variant of COVID. In the wake of those cancellations, several airlines <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/airlines-triple-pay-for-pilots-double-for-flight-attendants-amid-widespread-cancellations\">multiplied pay<\/a> for certain employees. While United Airlines offered three-and-a-half times pay for pilots, Spirit Airlines doubled pay for flight attendants.<\/p>\n<p>In April, U.S. District Judge Kathryn Kimball Mizelle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/breaking-federal-judge-in-florida-voids-bidens-national-mask-mandate-at-airports-planes-public-transit\">ended<\/a> the Biden administration\u2019s airplane masking mandate, arguing that the policy \u201cexceeded the CDC\u2019s statutory authority, improperly invoked the good cause exception to notice and comment rulemaking, and failed to adequately explain its decisions.\u201d In response, major American airlines <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/major-u-s-airlines-each-reveal-if-they-will-continue-to-enforce-bidens-mask-mandate\">quickly dropped<\/a> their masking mandates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEffective immediately, masks are optional for all airport employees, crew members and customers inside U.S. airports and onboard aircraft,\u201d Delta said at the time. \u201cDelta employees and customers may continue wearing masks if they so choose.
