Roughly 200 people \u2014 more than half of staff at the facility \u2014 were laid off, according to the Journal, while some will be permitted to relocate elsewhere within the company.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTesla clearly is in a major cost-cutting mode,\u201d Carnegie Mellon University engineering professor Raj Rajkumar explained to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/autos-transportation\/tesla-closes-an-office-layoff-hits-autopilot-jobs-including-hourly-ones-2022-06-29\/\">Reuters<\/a>, adding that \u201craw material costs and supply chain problems\u201d are troubling the company.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, Musk recently lamented that Tesla\u2019s factories have become \u201cgigantic money furnaces\u201d thanks to the <a href=\"http:\/\/dailywire.com\/topic\/supply-chain\">supply chain<\/a> issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust been trying to keep the factories operating the last couple years has been a very difficult thing, like supply chain interruptions have been severe, like extremely severe,\u201d Musk said in an interview published earlier this month. \u201cThe past two years have been an absolute nightmare of supply chain disruptions, one thing after another, and we are not out of it yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In another bout of layoffs, two employees who volunteered in LGBTQ and diversity roles <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/lgbtq-diversity-officials-heads-roll-at-elon-musks-tesla\">lost their jobs<\/a>. Both had received multiple promotions in their relatively short tenures, seemingly indicating that their performance was not a cause for concern and that the layoffs could be related to Musk\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/get-woke-go-broke-elon-musk-says-woke-mind-virus-makes-netflix-unwatchable-as-shares-plummet-20\">campaign<\/a> against the \u201cwoke mind virus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last week, former Tesla employees <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/employees-sue-elon-musks-tesla-over-mass-layoffs\">sued the automaker<\/a> for allegedly violating federal law through its execution of widespread dismissals. According to the class action complaint from John Lynch and Daxton Hartsfield \u2014 who worked at Tesla\u2019s Gigafactory 2 plant in Sparks, Nevada \u2014 the company violated the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act by failing to provide 60 days of advance written notice regarding the mass layoff.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlaintiffs and all similarly situated employees have been damaged by Tesla\u2019s conduct constituting violations of the WARN Act,\u201d the lawsuit argues, \u201cand are entitled to damages for their back pay and associated benefits for each day of the violation because Tesla has not acted in good faith nor with reasonable grounds to believe their acts and omissions were not a violation of the WARN Act.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The closure of the San Mateo facility could also reflect Tesla\u2019s broader transition out of California. Last year, Musk <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/elon-musk-says-tesla-moving-headquarters-from-california-to-texas\">revealed<\/a> that Tesla would be moving its headquarters from the Democrat-run state to a new facility near Austin, Texas. Musk had previously threatened to move Tesla\u2019s headquarters in 2020 when COVID-19 lockdowns shuttered the company\u2019s manufacturing facility in Fremont, California.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s tough for people to afford houses, and people have to come in from far away,\u201d Musk said at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/elon-musk-dons-cowboy-hat-to-launch-new-tesla-factory-in-texas\">launch<\/a> of the new facility. \u201cThere\u2019s a limit to how big you can scale in the Bay Area.
