A scene of horror and misery greeted authorities when they opened the doors to reveal the bodies of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/three-people-taken-into-custody-after-deadliest-smuggling-incident-in-american-history\">46 and 16 more people barely alive<\/a>. Five of the survivors subsequently died.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll were the apparent victims of human smugglers indifferent to the well-being of human life,\u201d U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Texas Ashley C. Hoff <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-wdtx\/pr\/statement-united-states-attorney-ashley-c-hoff-regarding-migrant-deaths-tractor-trailer\">said<\/a> in a statement. \u201cThe South Texas heat is brutal this time of year, especially given the recent record-high temperatures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">White House insists &#8216;border is closed&#8217; after 50 migrants found dead in truck <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/mjbdyT1vYd\">https:\/\/t.co\/mjbdyT1vYd<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/udYXh6yeIf\">pic.twitter.com\/udYXh6yeIf<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 New York Post (@nypost) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nypost\/status\/1541798427658436608?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 28, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Felipe Betancourt Jr. of Alamo, Texas, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.valleycentral.com\/news\/local-news\/rgv-company-claims-no-ties-to-migrant-tragedy\/\">told<\/a> ValleyCentral.com that reporters called his father believing the truck was from their Betancourt Trucking and Harvesting fleet based on its markings. But he said his family\u2019s semi has been parked in the Rio Grande Valley since last Friday. He believes its U.S. Department of Transportation number was duplicated or \u201ccloned\u201d last week when the truck was in Laredo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, that\u2019s how we found out,\u201d Betancourt said of the news inquiries. \u201cThen we started looking it up and you know, come to be that our DOT number is the one coming out you know, for the DOT that that truck over there in San Antonio has.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to bearing the same DOT markings, the truck used to smuggle the migrants was the same color as Betancourt\u2019s. But it does not bear the company\u2019s logo, officials <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2022\/06\/28\/san-antonio-truck-dead-migrants\/\">said<\/a>, according to The Texas Tribune.<\/p>\n<p>Betancourt pledged to help authorities in the investigation and wants the public to know his father\u2019s company is not connected to the truck tragedy.<\/p>\n<p>The victims included 39 men and a dozen women, according to officials. Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/m_ebrard\/status\/1541755714259091456?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1541755714259091456%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&#038;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fnews4sanantonio.com%2Fnews%2Flocal%2Fcity-worker-discovers-gruesome-scene-with-50-people-dead-inside-abandoned-18-wheeler-sanantonio-texas-trailer-migrants-ambulances-investigation-police-victims-hospitals-doctors\">tweeted<\/a> that the dead include 22 Mexicans, seven Guatemalans and two Hondurans. News4SanAntonio\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news4sanantonio.com\/news\/local\/city-worker-discovers-gruesome-scene-with-50-people-dead-inside-abandoned-18-wheeler-sanantonio-texas-trailer-migrants-ambulances-investigation-police-victims-hospitals-doctors\">reported<\/a>\u00a0Tuesday that five children were among the dead.<\/p>\n<p>Department of Homeland Security investigators have taken over the probe. On Tuesday, San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said police caught the driver in a nearby field and is now in federal custody, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2022\/06\/28\/us\/migrants-san-antonio-tractor-killed\">according<\/a> to The New York Times.
