This is comparable to or even more than the amount found in rocks in very low-life places on Earth, such as parts of the Atacama Desert in South America, and more than has been detected in Mars meteorites,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>The original experiment was conducted in 2014, however, the research took multiple years of analysis to interpret the data and release the results, according to NASA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo make the measurement, Curiosity delivered the sample to its <a href=\"https:\/\/mars.nasa.gov\/msl\/spacecraft\/instruments\/sam\/\">Sample Analysis at Mars<\/a>\u00a0(SAM) instrument, where an oven heated the powdered rock to progressively higher temperatures. This experiment used oxygen and heat to convert the organic carbon to carbon dioxide (CO2), the amount of which is measured to get the amount of organic carbon in the rocks. Adding oxygen and heat allows the carbon molecules to break apart and react carbon with oxygen to make CO2,\u201d NASA explained.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">In 2014, I placed rock samples in my SAM (Sample Analysis at Mars) instrument to measure the chemical compounds. After years of careful analysis from my team, they measured the total organic carbon in those Martian rocks for the first time. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/LeWXQ0nBny\">https:\/\/t.co\/LeWXQ0nBny<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Curiosity Rover (@MarsCuriosity) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MarsCuriosity\/status\/1541802871221497856?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 28, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The heated minerals then decomposed the materials to release the carbon and convert it to CO2\u00a0in the study.<\/p>\n<p>The Mars exploration program <a href=\"https:\/\/mars.nasa.gov\/news\/9214\/nasas-curiosity-takes-inventory-of-key-life-ingredient-on-mars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">noted<\/a> that \u201corganic carbon on Mars does not prove the existence of life there because it can also come from nonliving sources, such as meteorites, volcanoes, or be formed in place by surface reactions.\u201d Though organic carbon has been <a href=\"https:\/\/mars.nasa.gov\/news\/9113\/nasas-curiosity-rover-measures-intriguing-carbon-signature-on-mars\/?site=msl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found on Mars<\/a> before, the new measurement gives the total amount of organic carbon in the rock samples.<\/p>\n<p>The news follows another\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/nasa\">NASA<\/a> experiment that suggests the search for life on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/mars\">Mars<\/a>\u00a0may require digging deeper following the discovery that cosmic rays likely quickly destroy amino acids that would be found on the red planet\u2019s surface.<\/p>\n<p>As The Daily Wire previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/nasa-study-claims-research-may-need-to-dig-deep-to-find-evidence-of-life-on-mars\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>, the discovery of amino acids on Mars would be a significant step in the search for Martian life, as they are a key component to building proteins in terrestrial life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur results suggest that amino acids are destroyed by cosmic rays in the Martian surface rocks and regolith at much faster rates than previously thought,\u201d Alexander Pavlov of NASA\u2019s Goddard Space Flight Center <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/feature\/goddard\/2022\/dig-deep-for-evidence-of-martian-life\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCurrent Mars rover missions drill down to about two inches (around five centimeters). At those depths, it would take only 20 million years to destroy amino acids completely.
