Wade<\/em> \u201cdespicable\u201d on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Over the weekend, Becerra indicated that HHS might help transport women across state lines in order to get an abortion.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, Becerra sneered, \u201cOn Friday, June 24, five Americans decided to use the vast power bestowed upon them by our democracy and our Constitution to unconscionably put at risk the life and health of millions of our fellow Americans. They chose to unconscionably limit Americans\u2019 established freedom and autonomy to control their own body. Decision usually made in consultation with their doctor, not a politician. And they chose to unconscionably strip away the fundamental health care protections that every American of child-bearing age has known all their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFriday\u2019s Supreme Court decision was despicable, but it was not unpredictable. HHS has been preparing for this for some time,\u201d he sniped.<\/p>\n<p>In June 2021, speaking before the Senate Finance Committee hearing about the Biden administration\u2019s fiscal year 2022 HHS budget request, Becerra was confronted by Oklahoma GOP Senator James Lankford about the removal of the word \u201cmother\u201d and the insertion of the term \u201cbirthing people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lankford cornered Becerra about the elision of the word \u201cmother,\u201d asserting, \u201cI also notice you changed a term in your budget where you shifted in places from using the term \u2018mother\u2019 to \u2018birthing people\u2019 rather than \u2018mother.\u2019 Can you help me get a good definition of \u2018birthing people?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Becerra deflected, \u201cWell, I\u2019ll check on the language there, but I think if we\u2019re talking about those who give birth I think we\u2019re talking about \u2014\u201d Unable to bring himself to say \u201cmother,\u201d Becerra grinned, \u201cI don\u2019t know how else to explain it to you other than \u2026\u201d as his voice petered out.<\/p>\n<p>Lankford pressed, \u201cI was a little taken aback when I just read it and saw it that the term \u2018mother\u2019 was gone and it was replaced with \u2018birthing people\u201d and I didn\u2019t know if this was a direction you were going, if there were shifts, if there were regulatory changes that are happening related to that or what the purpose of that is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Becerra dodged, \u201cI think it\u2019s probably \u2014 and again I\u2019d have to go back and take a look at the language that was used in the budget, but I think it simply reflects the work that is being done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI definitely get that; I would only say the language is important always; we don\u2019t want to offend in our language; I get that,\u201d Lankford said. \u201cBut would you at least admit calling a mom a \u2018birthing person\u2019 could be offensive to some moms? They don\u2019t want to get like a \u2018Happy Birthing Person\u2019 card in May. Can you at least admit that term itself could be offensive to some moms?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Becerra still wouldn\u2019t admit Lankford\u2019s argument, instead laughing, \u201cSenator, I\u2019ll go back and take a look at the terminology that was used and I can get back to you, but again, if we\u2019re trying to be precise in the language that\u2019s used.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lankford fired, \u201cMom\u2019s a pretty good word.
