The vote doesn\u2019t need Democratic Governor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/gavin-newsom\">Gavin Newsom\u2019s<\/a> signature, although he is in favor of the move. It is also expected to pass due to many Californians being in favor of keeping Roe v. Wade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">According to a PPIC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ppic.org\/blog\/where-do-californians-stand-on-abortion\/\">poll<\/a> from last year, 77% of adults in California did not want to overturn the Supreme Court case, while 21% did want to overturn it. A majority of Republicans \u2014 at 59% \u2014 also did not want to overturn the decision, while 89% of Democrats agreed. Across all groups, the majority did not want to see the ruling overturned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The amendment will further certify the right to abortion in the state, although it is already protected in California law. California\u2019s constitution already has a right to privacy as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cCalifornia remains steadfast in the right of individuals to access abortion care,\u201d Toni G. Atkins (D), president pro tempore of the state Senate, told The Washington Post. \u201cThat\u2019s what we explicitly want to make sure continues to be the case, no matter who\u2019s in office, no matter who the judge is. \u2026 I don\u2019t want people to think we are safe here just because we have a constitution that guarantees a right to privacy \u2014 it doesn\u2019t say abortion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cCalifornia must continue to take every step possible to protect access to abortion,\u201d the\u00a0California Future of Abortion Council said in a statement, per the Post, saying the effort is \u201cthe response needed by our state right now to meet this moment of national crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In a press release sent to The Daily Wire, the California Family Council said that during speeches on the floor, \u201cmultiple Democrats rose to justify why they believed California should deny unborn children equal protection of the law, but legislators refused to answer a pointed question from Assemblyman Kevin Kiley about late-term abortions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cSCA 10 is extreme, even for a state like California,\u201d Jonathan Keller, President of the California Family Council, said. \u201cMany people who identify as pro-choice still reject the idea of abortions ending the lives of viable children late in pregnancy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cCalifornia Family Council plans to work with local, state, and national allies to expose the barbaric nature of this legislation,\u201d the release said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">State lawmakers, especially Newsom, have been pushing to make California a \u201csanctuary state\u201d for abortion, where women would come to the state for abortion services if the procedure was banned in their state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">After the Supreme Court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/united-states-supreme-court-overturns-roe-v-wade-leaves-abortion-restrictions-to-states\">ruled<\/a> 5-4 to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/pro-abortion-states-seek-to-become-safe-havens-for-women-seeking-abortions\">overturn<\/a> <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/roe-v-wade\">Roe v. Wade<\/a><\/em> and Planned Parenthood vs. Casey\u00a0Friday, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2022\/06\/24\/west-coast-states-launch-new-multi-state-commitment-to-reproductive-freedom-standing-united-on-protecting-abortion-access\/\">governors<\/a> of Oregon, California, and Washington \u201cissued a Multi-State Commitment to defend access to reproductive health care,\u201d including abortion and birth control, and \u201ccommitted to protecting patients and doctors against efforts by other states to export their abortion bans to our states.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Newsom pressed that the Supreme Court \u201cwant[s] to strip women of their liberty and let Republican states replace it with mandated birth,\u201d saying that the justices want to go back to a time period \u201cwhen women were not treated as equal citizens under the law.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Monday, California legislators voted to push forward a constitutional amendment regarding the right to contraception and abortion, meaning the topic will go before voters on the ballot in November.
