Under President Donald Trump\u2019s administration, the agency was led by acting officials.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI arrived at this decision after prayerfully considering what\u2019s best for our nation, my family, and the people of Harris County who elected me to serve a second term as Sheriff,\u201d he continued. \u201cI am grateful to President Biden for the honor of nominating me, and I wish this administration well as it strives to overcome the paralyzing political gridlock that threatens far more than our nation\u2019s border. Frankly, the dysfunction threatens America\u2019s heart and soul.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gonzalez, who is the Harris County Sheriff in Texas, was initially nominated in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2021\/04\/27\/president-biden-announces-key-administration-nominations-in-national-security-2\/\">April 2021<\/a> to direct ICE, an agency under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The mission of ICE is to address cross-border crime and illegal immigration that threaten U.S. national security and public safety.<\/p>\n<p>The Homeland Security Committee advanced Gonzalez\u2019s nomination in a party-line vote in August 2021.
