Ron DeSantis\u00a0 has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flgov.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/6.24.22-SB-1796-Veto-Letter.pdf\">vetoed<\/a> a bill that would have altered the state\u2019s alimony laws to allow for people when they retire\u2014a controversial push that critics say\u00a0\u201cthreatened to impoverish older ex-spouses who have been homemakers and depend on the payments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It is an emotionally charged issue that has a long history dating back to Rick Scott\u2019s tenure as governor between 2011 and 2019.<\/p>\n<p>On June 24, DeSantis decided he was not going to overhaul the alimony law that has now been \u201cup to bat\u201d three times and has had its third strike.<\/p>\n<p>The bill would have nixed permanent alimony and set up maximum payment based on the \u201cduration of marriage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the past, the measure has drawn emotional debate among legislators during the session that ended in March.<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis expressed concern over the bill allowing ex-spouses to have existing alimony agreements amended.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2022\/1796\">CS\/CS\/SB 1796<\/a> were to become law and be given retroactive effect as the legislature intends, it would unconstitutionally impair vest rights under certain pre-existing marital settlement agreements,\u201d the governor wrote in his veto letter.<\/p>\n<p>During the legislative process, many ex-spouses turned out to tell legislators that they did not want the bill because they agreed to give up assets at the time of their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-divorce\">divorce<\/a> in exchange for \u201cpermanent alimony awards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those in favor of the bill said that the bill would \u201cmodernize\u201d Florida\u2019s alimony laws by making the process more \u201cequitable and predictable\u201d for those seeking a divorce.<\/p>\n<p>In a written statement Marc Johnson, a Tampa lawyer and also the president of Florida Family Fairness released a prepared statement expressing disappointment in the governor\u2019s decision to veto the bill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are incredibly disappointed by the veto of this much needed bill.
