Ted Cruz (R-TX) blasted an attack by Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) that criticized a recent Supreme Court ruling regarding coach Joe Kennedy.<\/p>\n<p>Omar argued the ruling made religious freedom \u201cdead\u201d in America. Cruz argued that \u201cevery word\u201d in her critique was false.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Supreme Court just ruled that public school teachers can pressure students to join in prayer at public school events but can also retaliate against those that don\u2019t join in,\u201d Omar tweeted. \u201cReligious freedom is dead in America.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Every word of this is false. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/FSiml1689j\">https:\/\/t.co\/FSiml1689j<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ted Cruz (@tedcruz) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tedcruz\/status\/1541624682494976000?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 28, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The congresswoman\u2019s first claim accused the court of allowing teachers to \u201cpressure\u201d students to join in public prayer. In contrast, the ruling was limited to Coach Kennedy\u2019s personal freedom to pray publicly.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/firstliberty.org\/cases\/coachkennedy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to<\/a> First Liberty, which represented Kennedy in the case, \u201cOn September 17, 2015, Superintendent Aaron Leavell sent Coach Kennedy a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/firstliberty.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/20200722_Kennedy_Excerpts-of-Record_ER298-301.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener follow noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" data-feathr-click-track=\"true\">letter<\/a> informing him of the district\u2019s investigation into whether Coach Kennedy had appropriately complied with the school board\u2019s policy on \u2018Religious-Related Activities and Practices.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The school district noted that Kennedy had \u201cnot actively encouraged, or required, participation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Omar also claimed public schools could \u201cretaliate\u201d against students who don\u2019t join in prayer with teachers. The ruling did not offer any information regarding the treatment of students for a school staff member who chooses to personally pray at the conclusion of a football game.<\/p>\n<p>The congresswoman\u2019s conclusion that religious freedom is dead in America is the opposite of the case\u2019s conclusion. Kennedy instead acknowledged that the court ruling in his favor was a win for religious freedom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is just incredible to know that I did nothing wrong. Everything I did was fine,\u201d Kennedy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-10958965\/Incredible-know-did-wrong-Football-coach-fired-praying-wants-old-job-back.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> the Daily Mail following the ruling. \u201cAnd that the First Amendment is fine and well for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Justice Neil Gorsuch\u2019s opinion in Kennedy\u2019s case emphasized the protection of the Free Exercise and Free Speech Clauses of the First Amendment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere, a government entity sought to punish an individual for engaging in a brief, quiet, personal religious observance doubly protected by the Free Exercise and Free Speech Clauses of the First Amendment. And the only meaningful justification the government offered for its reprisal rested on a mistaken view that it had a duty to ferret out and suppress,\u201d Gorsuch <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/high-school-football-coach-scores-big-win-supreme-court-post-game-prayer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a>\u00a0in the Court\u2019s opinion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReligious observances even as it allows comparable secular speech.
