One victim\u2019s loved one said the mayor called her in tears to apologize after the crash.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[I told her], \u2018we trusted you and you let us down \u2026 You\u2019re the one supposed to be helping us to raise awareness and you\u2019ve let us all down,\u2019\u201d Judy Lindsay, whose daughter Hayley was killed by a drunk driver in 2009, told 7news.com.au. \u201cShe is lucky she didn\u2019t kill someone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">In Australia, a drunk mayor crashed after meeting with the families of crash victims. via \/r\/nottheonion <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/FRSgucwCJp\">https:\/\/t.co\/FRSgucwCJp<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/IN7L0vHUcM\">pic.twitter.com\/IN7L0vHUcM<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Lost At Home Podcast (@TheLostAtHome) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheLostAtHome\/status\/1541684227657310209?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 28, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Lindsay called for Williams to immediately resign.<\/p>\n<p>Williams, 55, had earlier met with Lindsay and the families of pregnant couple Kate Leadbetter and Matthew Field, who were killed in January 2021 along with their unborn baby by a drunk teen in a stolen car. She called the 10-year sentence meted out to the teen \u201cmanifestly inadequate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe talked about road safety awareness, we talked about drink driving, we talked about drug driving, we talked about how we were going to change the youth justice act and how we were going to get this story out,\u201d Lindsay told 7NEWS.<\/p>\n<p>Williams pledged to make stopping drunk driving her political \u201clegacy,\u201d Lindsay said.<\/p>\n<p>Williams, who admitted having \u201cseveral glasses of wine\u201d before the crash, has so far refused to resign, claiming it would be a \u201crash decision.\u201d She has not been charged with the accident. She suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are no excuses for my actions,\u201d Williams said in a televised news conference. \u201cI made a serious error of judgment and I will continue to service this community and I am deeply regretful for those actions. Fortunately there were no injuries, and no one else was involved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Queensland Opposition Leader David Crisafulli said Williams must face the consequences for her actions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have zero tolerance for drunk driving, and it doesn\u2019t matter who you are, it doesn\u2019t matter what you do, it doesn\u2019t matter where you live: you should never put yourself in that position,\u201d he told reporters on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd there has to be consequences for actions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Most Australian jurisdictions have blood-alcohol limits of .05% for drivers, and steep fines and criminal penalties for those convicted of the offense.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An Australian mayor downed \u201cseveral glasses of wine\u201d and crashed her car into a tree just hours after meeting with the families of drunk drivers and vowing to fight the deadly scourge, according to reports.
