The popular subreddit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/TumblrInAction\/top\/?sort=top&#038;t=month\">TumblrInAction<\/a>, with almost 500,000 active users, and its little sister sub, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/SocialJusticeInAction\/\">SocialJusticeInAction,<\/a> with 96,000 users, each received a no-warning ban for \u201cpromoting hate\u201d on the platform. <\/p>\n<p>What did these Redditors do wrong to merit such a punishment? These subs allowed users to post anti-woke and often truthful, gender-critical content that pushed \u201cidentity invalidation.\u201d Reddit\u2019s victims had employed free speech on the platform, thus becoming popular and therefore had to go.<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018Promoting Hate\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Until its demise on Monday, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220523125131\/https:\/www.reddit.com\/r\/TumblrInAction\/\">r\/TumblrInAction<\/a> (TIA) had been one of the more popular and older subreddits to feature funny and critical content on, among other things, the modern trans and gender identity movements. <\/p>\n<p>As Alex \u201cthe Hatman,\u201d a top TIA moderator and the creator of SocialJusticeInAction (SJIA), shared with me, the notification they<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/KotakuInAction\/comments\/vhh9uv\/subreddit_socialjusticeinaction_banned\/\">received<\/a> from Reddit said the subreddits had been taken down for \u201cviolating Reddit\u2019s rule against promoting hate.\u201d Yet he \u201creceived no word from the administrators as to what posts specifically were the cause of the ban,\u201d Hatman said. <\/p>\n<p>It might seem strange in retrospect, but until the ban, the subs had been in Reddit\u2019s good graces without a single significant issue or warning before this year. Just six months ago, a Reddit administrator reached out to Hatman to let him know that TIA would be in danger of a ban if they didn\u2019t enforce an <em>unwritten<\/em> rule about \u201cidentity invalidation,\u201d or as Hatman told me, \u201cBasically, the idea that if we don\u2019t affirm someone\u2019s self-identity, we\u2019re engaging in hate speech,\u201d no matter how serious or silly it may be.<\/p>\n<h2>The LibsofTikTok of Reddit<\/h2>\n<p>To Hatman and the other mods, this demand based on an unspecific clause seemed preposterous. These two subs had started as a way to dispute the trans and gender identity movements long before the corporate media came on board, whether they are \u201cclaiming to be Benjamin Franklin\u201d or \u201cthey\u2019re a wolf trapped inside a human body,\u201d as the TIA sub would say. <\/p>\n<p>The subs were comparable to the Reddit version of the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/libsoftiktok?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor\">LibsofTikTok<\/a> Twitter account, whose content was sometimes shared. On the sub would be a mix of run-of-the-mill conservative content, with a smattering of libertarian posts and lots of documenting the crazy things \u201cSJWs\u201d would say. The purpose of the subs was to allow free speech to thrive on complicated topics that couldn\u2019t be discussed elsewhere and to do it humorously.<\/p>\n<p>For most of their run, the subs weren\u2019t specifically about the trans issue. TIA\u2019s more full tilt on discussing the issue of detransitioning came after subreddits specifically about that issue, r\/GenderCritical and r\/LGBDropTheT got <a href=\"https:\/\/4w.pub\/new-feminist-site-ovarit-fills-the-gap-left-by-r-gendercritical\/\">shut down<\/a> in 2020. Hartman said TIA became a haven for free speech and attracted Redditors who needed it. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were known for not banning people based on their genuinely-held opinions,\u201d Hartman said. \u201cAs a result, the number of posts about trans-identified people on TIA skyrocketed, and we were considered a \u2018TERF-friendly sub\u2019 by those who hated us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When asked for comment on the ban, Cameron Njaa, the Reddit policy and safety communications manager, said she had \u201cnothing to share outside of the public ban message for the subreddit.\u201d <\/p>\n<h2>Nowhere is Safe<\/h2>\n<p>Following this shock ban, many moderators for other right-wing-ish subs are very much disconcerted. Reddit is signaling that no subreddit is safe. Much more mainstream conservative subreddits like r\/PoliticalCompassMemes, r\/conservative, or r\/JordanPeterson could be next to feel the Reddit administration\u2019s wrath.<\/p>\n<p>Silicon Valley\u2019s unwritten rules are almost so obvious as not to merit discussion. From the recent case of YouTube demonetizing the Act Man for highlighting YouTube\u2019s purposeful ignorance of abuse on their platform, to <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/05\/04\/twitter-lost-its-way-on-free-speech-right-when-donald-trump-entered-national-politics\/\">banning<\/a> Donald Trump from Twitter and <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2020\/04\/28\/how-reddits-quarantine-of-the_donald-presaged-social-medias-control-over-information\/\">r\/The_Donald<\/a> from Reddit; here we have yet another case of selective enforcement. It doesn\u2019t matter what official company rules are broken. It only matters if Big Tech moderators want someone <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=freocCrWQFw\">gone<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As for the mods of TIA and SJIA, they leave with their heads held high but carrying a warning: \u201cWe simply enforced the global rules as written. We never compromised our values\u2014we always allowed people to speak their genuinely-held opinions, as long as it didn\u2019t cross over into actual, unironic bigotry. When the admins told us to go further with their unwritten \u2018identity invalidation\u2019 rule, we refused, and it\u2019s possible that that refusal is what got us banned in the end.
