Ron DeSantis vowed to expand \u201cpro-life protections\u201d in his state following the Supreme Court\u2019s ruling to overturn Roe v. Wade.<\/p>\n<p>The Court ruled that the 1973 landmark decision Roe v. Wade was \u201cegregiously wrong from the start\u201d and thereby <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/06\/24\/roe-v-wade-overturned-supreme-court-dobbs-v-jackson-womens-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">upheld<\/a> the Mississippi law prohibiting abortions past 15 weeks of pregnancy in the case Dobbs v. Jackson Women\u2019s Heath Organization. Roe v. Wade established that states could not outlaw abortions before fetal viability, which begins at 24 weeks gestation.<\/p>\n<p>The Florida governor celebrated the Court\u2019s ruling in a Friday statement and outlined his state\u2019s future steps surrounding abortion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe prayers of millions have been answered. For nearly fifty years, the U.S. Supreme Court has prohibited virtually any meaningful pro-life protection, but this was not grounded in the text, history or structure of our Constitution,\u201d DeSantis said. \u201cBy properly interpreting the Constitution, the Dobbs majority has restored the people\u2019s role in our republic and a sense of hope that every life counts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFlorida will continue to defend its recently enacted pro-life reforms against state court challenges, will work to expand pro-life protections, and will stand for life by promoting adoption, foster care and child welfare.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">By properly interpreting the Constitution, the Supreme Court has answered the prayers of millions upon millions of Americans. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/CsPFpNnUPk\">pic.twitter.com\/CsPFpNnUPk<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ron DeSantis (@GovRonDeSantis) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovRonDeSantis\/status\/1540378975251341315?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 24, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In April, DeSantis <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/04\/14\/desantis-15-week-abortion-roe-dobbs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">signed<\/a> legislation directly challenging Roe v. Wade by prohibiting abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy, with the exception of medical emergencies threatening the life and health of the mother and deadly fetal abnormalities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bill today will provide protections for unborn children from\u00a0abortion when the child reaches fifteen weeks of gestational age,\u201d DeSantis\u00a0said during the bill\u2019s signing. \u201cOf course, these are babies that have heartbeats and that can feel pain and can move.\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/06\/24\/republicans-reactions-roe-v-wade-abortion-supreme-court-justices-congress-dobbs-jackson-womens-health-organization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: \u2018Save Countless Innocent Lives\u2019: Republicans Cheer End Of Roe v. Wade)\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Justice Samuel Alito, who wrote the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/opinions\/21pdf\/19-1392_6j37.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">majority opinion<\/a>, wrote that abortion is not protected within any constitutional provision, including the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, which he said only protects unnamed rights that are \u201cdeeply rooted\u201d in the nation\u2019s \u201chistory and traditions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe hold that Roe and Casey must be overruled. The Constitution makes no reference to abortion, and no such right is implicitly protected by any constitutional provision, including the one on which the defenders of Roe and Casey now chiefly rely \u2014 the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment,\u201d Alito wrote. \u201cThat provision has been held to guarantee some rights that are not mentioned in the Constitution, but any such right must be \u2018deeply rooted in this Nation\u2019s history and tradition\u2019 and \u2018implicit in the concept of ordered liberty.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Justices Amy Coney Barrett, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, John Roberts and Clarence Thomas joined the majority opinion.
